Kovalainen and Lapierre is pretty strong! World Series champion and Macau GP winner - and Kovalainen must start as favourite for the GP2 title.

Lisboa should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Lapierre is nothing more than a good driver: in my opinion Premat or Rosberg are more stronger than him. He won Macau, but i remember that 4 cars stopped in front of himm! About Kovalainen, i think that around him there is a very good marketing! In F.3 he was good but not a superstar like Button, Hamilton, Davidson, ecc. Than he won World Series in his second year in the championship. Ok, good, but not special. Someone more strong than him is arriving, and for Heikki will be not easy story.....

I think nobody in Gp2 will have a easy story....

But also i think that Heikki is the big favourite for the title.

Did this 'someone more strong' beat Michael Schumacher to win the Race of Champion?

No, thought not.

RECE OF CHAMPIONS is Wrestling!!! I like to speak about Motor Racing! Anyway, it's enough Montagny to beat Kovalainen: remember 2003? i suspect in this form there is Kovalainen management staff!

OK - so what's the state of play?

Here's what we know so far (officially)

ARDEN: Kovalianen and Lapierre
ART: TBA, TBA
BCN: Viso, TBA
CAMPOS: Alvares, TBA
COLONI: TBA, TBA
DAMS: Lopez and Fauzy
DAVE PRICE: Sharp, TBA
DURANGO: TBA, TBA
HiTECH: Piquet, Negrao
iSPORT: Speed, TBA
RACING ENGINEERING: Garcia, TBA
SUPER NOVA: TBA, TBA

So, it's beginning to fill up.

And it's looking like a quality field.

The next couple of weeks will be interesting - we're likely to see announcements of Piccione, Rosberg, Neel Jani and several others.

Including, DanFlag's site suggests, possibly Giorgio Pantano - which would be interesting.

I hope Super Nova can put together a decent squad; they've had too long in the doldrums for a team with such a pedigree. Might van der Merwe get a second season with the team? Might Sam Hancock go back? Or van Hooydonk?

Doornbos has a race seat with Jordan.

As for Montagny, he is not allowed to race in GP2 - that was one of the conditions of him being the development driver.

SuperNova - I think David Sears would drive the car himself before having Jeffrey van Hooydonk back. Sam Hancock probably doesn't have enough money for GP2.

SuperNova could well surprise people with driver choice. And how much will it be influenced by their involvement with a team in A1GP?

All will be revealed.

Concerning a post a few back, Pantano would - IMHO - be mad to come back again. He did too many seasons in F3000 as it is, and was very lucky to get a Jordan drive on the back of it, but he has little to gain now.

What about Timo Glock, if he doesn't get an F1 race drive?

Heard the two JVA drivers from Euro3000, Reid and Lloyd might in with a chance, but I think is only rumour as I don't think either has the budget.

First time I've seen Reid linked with a GP2 drive of any sort.
He was talking about F Superfund... but has been testing Super Formula Renault V6 World Series (or whatever it's called)

The "silly season" notes I've been keeping say Reid was due to test for Super Nova at one point in the off-season. Can't remember where I read that though. I take it nothing came of this?

Except for the fact that Sears said he support GP2 series plans, I know for sure I have'nt listed anything about SuperNova here:

Any chance Richard Lyons could end up in GP2 if his 2005 F1 plans fall through?

I would think it's possible.

I reckon Lyons could do a good job.

Absolutely. But would he want to spend money to stay at this level, when he's pretty much proved himself in Formula Nippon? It would be interesting if experienced guys like Pantano and Lyons make up part of the GP2 field, much like in F2 or the early seasons of F3000 with the likes of Moreno and Martini.

They would be good benchmarks for younger drivers, I'd have thought.
