These are the length and average lap time (excluding in/out laps) of the long runs in that session:
  • Fassler did 11 laps (out lap 13, in lap 23). Average lap time = 3:30.833.
  • Capello did 11 laps (out lap 7, in lap 17). Average lap time = 3:30.606.
  • McNish did 11 laps (out lap 18, in lap 28). Average lap time = 3:30.400.
  • Lamy did 12 laps (out lap 7, in lap 18). Average lap time = 3:35.355.

Bl00dy hell, it's going to be a mad race. I don't think either team was actually expecting all six factory cars within less than 6 tenths of a second around Le Mans.

Well done Benoit on the pole... now all bets are off for the race.

I saw in the pdf of the last qualifying session that he set his time at the end of a 10 lap stint. So his tyres were not completely fresh. Pretty amazing!

BTW the ideal lap of #2 Audi would have been 3:25.384 vs 3:25.528 for #9 Peugeot (Pagenaud) vs 3:25.580 for #3 Audi (Kristensen). So Montagny's prediction of 3:25.5 was spot on...

I must have missed that.

I remember that Paul Truswell explicitely mentioned that Peugeot has a fuel economy advantage (which was clear from the test day), but that the long run of Lamy during qualifying 2 was a lot slower that the long runs of the Audis. He said that 5 sec a lap means a gap of 55 sec during a complete stint.

That is why I looked up the times and calculated the average lap time myself.

According to this Audi press article Treluyer was doing a race simulation
Quote:
Benoît Tréluyer’s performance was particularly impressive. The Frenchman clinched the pole position 30 minutes before midnight on the 21st lap of a race simulation on used tires.

The marketing people might not have allowed Baretzky to build the engine he wanted to (2.0 liter 4 cilinder turbo). With his "hot side inside" V6 TDI engine, he can still apply his favorite waste energy recovery system. I wonder which technology Baretzky will chose: electric turbo-compounding, mechanical turbo-compounding, thermo-electricity, ... If they use an electric system they can use it to replace the alternator or to power an electric motor connected to the wheels.
More hints about the future electrification of the R18: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92126
Quote:
Ulrich Baretzky, Audi Sport's head of engine technology, confirmed that they are looking beyond conventional hybrid systems.

"One of the reasons we decided to have a V6 engine [in the R18] was to have enough space and the maximum variability to integrate engine recovery systems of any kind or shape," Baretzky told AUTOSPORT.
...
"I don't like to use the word 'hybrid'. I prefer to look at complete energy recovery systems which include every kind of energy efficiency technology. A brake energy recovery system like KERS is just one of them, for sure not the only one, and maybe not the best one."

Well Tom is scandinavian.
Allan is Scottish and therefor has scandinavian roots.
and Dindo is - well it's 3 against 1, so he doesn't matter in this case . (the 3rd being the blond top)

Fantastic victory for the #2 R18, really nice from them !!!! Congratulations to Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer

But I guess what will be more showed by world medias will be the spectacular and huge crashes of Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller

Hopefully they'll be shown for what they actually are: proof of how racing cars are designed to avoid major injuries for the drivers in extreme situations like that. Proof of the fact that racing teams put drivers' safety above all else when designing their cars.

Well, Audi certainly beat Peugeot at their own game. Built a coupe and kept it ahead of the Pugs (who had years of experience with coupes) practically the whole race. Congratulations to the whole Audi crew.

Let's be happy that Audi adopted the Peugeot game, now at least McNish and Rockefeller live to tell about it.

So no different than the status quo before the race then?

Dindo himself said during the race he does not know yet; I'm can't imagine they'd let him go in the first 12 hours after the race.

Well Dindo is sort of semi retired now because he only does Le Mans and Sebring. Don't think he'd fully retire just yet though.

Dindo said at the launch of the R18 that the R18 will be his final car at Audi. And that he will only be joining Audi in the start of development (1 year).
This would indicate he is done.
But the early crash might change his mind for 1 year more.
