possible upside: drizzly rain, where the mediums would be clearly better than the softs, or real rain when everyone would pit before the mediums lost their edge. possible downside: mediums going off well before the end of the race and having to be nursed to the finish. Ferrari took a risk, possible upside: extra set of new tyres to use in Q2 or Q3. possible downside: failure to get into Q2. As it happened, they both got the downside part of their particular risk, so we only have to look at the results to see who judged their risks best. |

Merc could afford to take a calculated gamble. The worst that would happen is they would finish off the podium. Of course it helped that it didn't really rain. I am surprised there was a 90% chance of rain at the beginning of the race
Ferrari, even by their standards, that was bad leaving Leclerc in the pits. I know they've made mistakes in the past, but I thought even them would have a backup plan They did ok getting Vettel to finish second and they were a bit closer to Merc, so they just need to organise things better. But I'm not holding my breath |

The latest F1 Power Rankings highlight the problem at Mercedes - people are over estimating how good the cars are, and not giving the drivers the credit they deserve.
Their drivers are only 2nd and 3rd - so obviously their tactic is wrong. At the start of the season, we saw them off the pace of Ferrari - this was clearly sandbagging in an effort to make their drivers seem more impressive when the 'five-man panel assesses each driver after every Grand Prix and scores them out of 10 according to their performance across the weekend – taking machinery out of the equation' Since then, they have struggled to make the results seem anything more than a machinery specific situation. I noticed this with Hamilton calling his Monaco result a 'miracle', and James Vowle coming on the radio to inform us that it is all about the driver being able to deliver a result, and not the car! |

A 'scruffy qualifying lap' for Hamilton. But a new record. I guess scruffy is the new brilliant.......
And people actually read this? |

I can tend to do this myself. I only have one problem with Hamilton his entire career but I can only explain if you know who RUSTY WALLACE is. He is much better than I am willing to admit just because he has RW syndrome.
Edit - And I realize that's going to **** off one forum user and I'm sorry. |

To be fair a lot of cars looked on the edge in qualifying. There seemed to be a lot of power sliding, which was a great sight to see

They have to wait until Austria now for their next decent result.

It was this race last season Merc had a double DNF. Now it seems Ferrari have an edge over them here. Should make for an interesting race

The red mob keep wanting to change the Pirelli construction/compounding, and then they go do a risky/foolish thing like this to get pole.. Fully expect a silver 1-2 by mid race |

Like they wanted every accolade in the pre season practise by going faster than everyone else instead of using it to understand the car and learning how to manage the team & cars.
