BTCC Performance Tips
G'day folks
I'm new here and I see that you have a very good website with lots of good and friendly people here and loads of knoledgeable advice. I joined this site for the sole purpose for the love of motorsport. I drive a 1996 E36 318is BMW, and I would love to do the BTCC racing conversion to the engine. And I'm turning to the people that knows what they are talking about for advice and what kind of parts to use, that will include pistons, valves, camm's, crank mods and stuff. I was think of a 2.2L bore with flat top pistons and doing a stroker conversion to it with camms etc. As i understand the BTCC E36 beemers peak at 10 000rpm, is that true? I was also thinking of replacing the feul managment with a Microtech sytem from Australia and maybe later a centrifugal supercharger or a twinscrew. I would appreciate any advice or links to any sites that will be able to help me make the right choices. Thank You Sakkie |

Sakkie, you obviously have too much money.
To build your bimmer up to BTCC spec, you're looking at a fortune. The BTCC 318iS cars didn't rev beyond 8500 as that's where the championship standard Monk rev limiter was set. You may be confusing it with the older 4 cylinder 2.5L M3 which did run to 10000 in the DTM in it's last years. The fuel management system could be done using a DTA system, which is inexpensive in comparison with others, and very versatile (and it supports the use of an oxygen censor which is very very useful for road use & passing MoT's) You'd need a manifold/set of throttle bodies. CAMS - there's a wide choice. All depends on what you want to do with it. What ever you choose, you'll lose somewhere to gain somewhere else. To make it a whizzy engine, you're going to lose bottom end power. Cylinder Head - will need gas flowing. Lots of people will do this for you. Some will do it well, some won't. Some will make a botch of it and charge you lots! I could go on, and on, and on, but it's time to say "Find a BMW specialist tuner" In this global economy, you may find the best in Germany of all places (strange, I'm not sure why!!!) And you want to use this on the road? If it passes an MoT with that many mods! Final point. You want cheap horsepower. It's not being used for motorsport. I have two words to say to you. Nitrous and Oxide. Kits are much cleverer than they used to be, and it's easy to fit. Look what Top Gear did with a V12 XJS, and a budget of ten bob, and two old tellies! As NoS and WOW! Rob. |
