The Ferrari that season was so dominant. Not that Hill and Von Trips were bad drivers, but on the same level as Stirling Moss who’s skill meant his Lotus beat the dominant Ferraris twice that season? Probably not

Not on Moss’s level, no. Phil Hill was a very strong all-rounder, though, with a good technical brain. Did some great work at Chaparral.

I think the argument is fair enough really, its the point of a forum and worth of discussion.
No-one is being insulting or ride, they are (hopefully) merely pointing out that some defences were not really very good. I am sure Scheckter would much rather have had a better car in 1980, but he had done his job, achieved his goal and was not really that fussed about staying around. Nothing wrong in that. People threw this at Nico too, but he admitted he could not motivate himself to go to those lengths again, nothing wrong in that |

Yeah , what a loser Phil Hill was. Apart from being world champion (was he supposed to give the trophy back because Von Trips died ? ) he was a hugely respected and capable racing driver ,triple Le Mans winner , great photographer and a master car restorer .
Sorry but I find the sneering , belittling subtext of the whole thread at odds with the subject matter - every world champion has earned his title , full stop . |

We may well have reached the point at which this thread has served whatever purpose it was originally deemed to serve?

On one hand the question is straight forward enough, but on the other it seems, well,... At the end of the day any defencing WDC needs equipment at least as capable as the thing they clinched the title with to be able to defend. Says Mr stating the bleeding obvious |
