McLaren road cars

If cost was no object which would you prefer - A McLaren F1
(road car) or the new McLaren-Mercedes.

I'd go for the F1 over the new one.

definately the F1. Quicker, more seats, rarer (or at least it will be, soon), and in my opinion looks better. A bit pricey to service though, although if money were no object...

Besides which the SLR is covered in Merc badges! And to add insult to it, the new CL63 is only fractionally slower but half the price!

Oh, right, thanks Mattracer for reminding me. The coolest V12 engine ever made. Definitely the F1!

Is it me or is the new SLR just.... I dunno.... not *quite* right?? Not-as-good-as-expected??

1) it's not the greatest looking thing in the world 2) a parts-bin interior 3) the SL55/CL63 exist.

Again, there's a new topic in this somewhere....

The F1. There aren't many cars I would have instead anyway!
A Mercedes, never.

The badge is the babe magnet, because, you know, Daimlers are a girls best friend.

F1 gets my vote too.

F1, by miles because:

- It loooks SOOO much better.
- It has racing success (though new 'Super-Merc' might have).
- It's faster.
- I'd rather have a McLaren(-BMW) than a Mercedes-McLaren.
- Did I mention it looks good?...

Definitely the FI, THE classic supercar and in its own time too. Nothing since matches it in all its facets - it is the most complete supercar.

I'm sure you good guys remember this but just in case ...
The engine was made by BMW especially for the McLaren. It wasn't a 'converted' or modified version of an existing BMW V12 and in fact had more in common in design with two M3 engines using a V12 block than anything else they were producing at the time.
A pretty special 6.1 litre 60 degree motor. The hand made exhaust system was more expensive than a complete BMW V12 motor out of the seven series!

Has anyone read the article in the F1 mag this month about buying an ex-Ferrari F1 car. It just occured to me that they start at around the same price as the Macca. Hmmm, wonder which one would be quicker round a track... Plus the last time I was pressed up against the McLaren showroom window on Park Lane, what should drive past but ANOTHER McLaren F1. At least you wouldn't have such a "common" car if you went the ex-Formula 1 route!!!

I'd have both. As the opening post said "if money was no object". Well, in that case, I could afford one of each.

Not that Uncle Ron would let me have the F1 car... although the two-seater is in semi-retirement now so I might be able to persuade him to let me give it a good home

There is a certain 'je ne sais quoi' about the Merc - I've heard about the SLA, which is going to be more of a raw driver's machine, but it's like the Eurofighter plane - completely unstable and couldn't fly without a computer to keep it in the air.

The McLaren is a supercar, the SLR a bit of a cruiser - I'd love to see Merc build an all-out drivers supercar...something along the lines of that £1 million thing they were selling a year or 5 back.
