Rally Day 2016 - Castle Combe

Had my first visit to Castle Combe on Saturday for the annual Rally Day and left feeling a bit underwhelmed as it felt like a modified car show with a few rally cars thrown in.

Anyway here here's my pics n vid from the day:

I'm afraid it has gone downhill since the original organiser died. He had the passion, drive and respect of the rallying community which attracted big names and made it a success. It's been really hard to replicate since his sad loss.

I did Rallyday religiously for a lot of years (in fact the first few years I went was on the train as I had no driving license!), but I have been unable to make it the last couple of years.

I was going to go this year, but I completely forgot about it until the last minute. Based on what I have read on Facebook it seems that may have been a blessing in disguise. I believe they have completely changed the format and got nowhere near as many cars in attendance.

Still, good pics and video geordie!

You look at events like the Goodwood FoS/ Revival and wish Rallying could do something similar.....
It seems just like the poor relation, even though there are some wealthy people involved.

I would imagine like most things interest has waned a little, it is a fair reflection of rallying worldwide and in terms of the UK the recent spectator changes have really hurt local rallies so perhaps the interest has moved on to other areas of off road sport.

I would guess if the people who used to organise the show have moved on, it might be a good guess to agree with the above point that contacts have been lost and therefore it's harder to get people to come over.

I think the UK SHOULD have a massive slowly sideways etc event like the ones in Italy, Germany and a few other places. I suppose it is getting it sorted! But it would be properly expensive,a nd the Roger Clark seems to have died which is a shame.

I think the best event would be the McRae stages, it was awesome for the first few years, and with that name it should be possible to get crews and big names from Europe and the world to come over, it just needs organising.

The Forest Rally Stage is, in my personal opinion, the most underrated part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. They haven't had much modern machinery the last couple of years (VW were at the FoS this year, but they only ran the Polo WRC up the hill), but they always have a good selection of classic rally cars and most of them are driven properly round the rally stage.

I used to do two days at the FoS so I could spend a whole day up on the rally stage, but with the rising ticket costs I just do one day now and get there silly early!

Very many thanks for posting your photos for those of us to enjoy who couldn't make the event itself.

Hadn't reaslised it was on - only found out about it b chance whilst at Pembrey yesterday for the MSA Rallycross event.

No shots of the rally Allegro, then???! Lol!

Thanks again and hope to make it next year. Cheers, Steve

We took the Escort to Rallyday in 2010 - we haven't been back as we felt very much like 2nd class citizens stuck out in a field wedged into a very tight area whilst all the shiny shiny owners clubs were in the circuit paddock area. Also the 'stage' that ran alongside the circuit was too short and mickey mouse - a couple of hundred metres at best. Officially we were allowed 4 runs but because nobody was really bothering with it they dropped that and you could go as many times as you liked.

The track sessions (again 4 I think) were ok but Combe isn't ideal for rally cars - we were on the limiter in 6th before getting to the Avon Rise and every straight after that. Quarry is good fun though as you can really throw the car sideways through there. Do they still do public track time? I always found that a bit odd as well - I don't want to see road cars pootling around at a rally event.

And of course no trip on track at Combe is complete without mentioning the noise police. The first attempt at passing the noise test saw our car register 104db - up until then its highest reading on any event was 97db. We got it down to 99db (but the delay cost us our first slot on track). We subsequently got pulled for another noise check coming back off the circuit as we had 'obviously taken a noise trap off' (we never had one on). I know Combe has issues with noise but their testers attitude really doesn't make you want to go back.

The stage at FOS is good but you don't really know what you're going to see whilst you're up there. Ideally they'd have a more regimented running order like the hillclimb - that way you can see the cars you really want to see. Getting there silly early is the way to go (did that this year ).

Yeah, fully agree with your point on running order or some sort of schedule. There is a certain amount of pot luck getting to see everything running.

Part of the reason I always opt for the FoS on Saturday is things tend to be winding down (and cars will be broken!) on the rally stage on Sunday.
