Diffey is back

Just saw a news item that Leigh Diffey will replace Neil Crompton at Ten for the rest of the season.

I don't how this will effect World Superbike commentary, but it is a big plus for V8 Supercars.

I was dreading the thought that Greg Rust might be back in the commentary box.

where abouts did you read this.

He's only in his econd year over there, and wouldn't V8s be a step down from a world championship. He's gonna be better than Rusty though.

Due to work commitments I usually miss all of these broadcasts. Very few do I see on tape, too, so I have little idea of what is happening in this field.

But I know that I do like Crompton's commentary and style of commentary, informative and casual most of the time. It's almost a shame that he gets a drive sometimes...

Yeah I have also enjoyed Cromptons commentary - look at F1 and Indy Cars - the commentary teams all have recent ex drivers. Have any of the Channel 10 commentators actually sat in a V8 Supercar let alone driven one ?

Don't forget Crompton was a commentator before he was a car racer. He used to commontate on the Touring Cars between 1985-1992 on channel 7, and was also on the commentary team for the 1984 Sandown 500.

Racer, I would suggest that Neil has been racing (in go-karts at least) since he was a wee whippersnapper. He is a racing driver. I once saw a comment of his where he said, "People always say that I'm not a bad driver, for a commentator. When it's actually the other way around. I'm a racing driver who commentates, not a commentator who races."

Certainly he was into the commnentary box before he raced cars, but it was clear where his goals lay. It was about 1985, for instance, that he used his ability to use the media position he held to get the sponsorship necessary to drive Peter Boylan's Formula Holden for the season, and he went to the States a few years ago to drive as well.

Not silly... and not bad at the wheel either.

I don't know if Diffey will be missing any rounds of the SBK, will Crompton even get his own car after the enduros?

Crompton started out racing motorcross, then got into production cars a bit iirc. There is one classic story of his from when he was riding the camera bike that follwed the runners in a marathon, which wound up with poor Neil wearing the front of a bus...
