I think Ray Allen was a soldier at the time. I do know that Malcolm Payne who finished second in the inagural race was a duck farmer from Norfolk.

They wouldn't be doing Formula Ford on a soldier's salary today would they.

From the Formula Ford Book, the results of the first-ever FF race (all in Lotuses):
1st 94 R. Allen (Motor Racing Stables Ltd), 10"04.4 2nd 103 M. Payne (Jim Russell Racing Drivers' School), 10"10.2 3rd 105 C. Bourgoigne (JRRDC), 10"10.8 4th 104 M. Fletcher (JRRDC), 10"12.0 5th 98 P. Wardle (MRS), 10"12.6 6th 85 E. Patrick (MRS), 10"13.4 George Lewis led the first lap, but spun out to be the first-ever FF retirement (if you don't count S. Sherman, who was pushed off the grid). Otherwise it was Allen all the way. |

No - he had a 15th, someone's done worse than that as their best result.

Lots of guys never finished a race, and a fair few never qualified. Are we talking about classified finishes only?

Classified finishes only. (And finishes, so no coming back with Elmer George at Indy or anything like that.)

This would have to involve the cars being v reliable like they currently are now relative to days gone by so it muct that Japanese chap from a couple of years back, Ide, was that his name in the Super Aguri?

Ide had a 13th (matching Emilio de Villota). Your thought on reliability is eminently logical, but remember in the 1950s you had a lot more cars entering and starting some races...

Dave Morgan finished 18th in Silverstone in 1975. In the early 1950s the Indy 500 was a round of the F1 world championship and the world and his mother used to enter that, so there may have been somebody classified lower that Dave Morgan. Hopefully Dave doesn't hold that record as he was a far better driver than that would make him out to be... particularly in Formula Atlantic back in the mid 1970s.

You're right - Dave doesn't hold that record.
It's not an Indy person, I don't think they ever had 18 people within 20 laps of the winner (to make it WC-friendly classification). |
