ebay racecar bits
having just sold a strut to another 10 tenths member via ebay i got thinking about my new racecar and how much of it i bought on ebay, like the shell, front inserts, rear shocks, top mounts, gearbox, air filter, intercooler, turbo bits, hoses, dump valve, camshaft, boost gauge, twin plate paddle clutch and so on, not to mention selling 90% of my old car on ebay,
anyone built a whole car via ebay? Last edited by graham bahr; 23 Apr 2005 at 13:05. |

Is there a section for race car bits or do you just hunt through the BMW sections?

Unbelievable. Earlier today as I was clearing out another pile of 'stock' to sell I was wondering if it would be possible to build an entire racer sourced purely from eBay! So funny you should ask
I then got to thinking wether, if you approached them with the suggestion they'd offer anything by way of sponsorship. You could have an ebay branded car and where possible source all parts and consumables via. their site, as well as selling other bits to fund it... |

MG David and I source a lot of MG Midget bits on ebay. We also sell a lot. I expect over time we've bought the constituent parts of a whole car. Rolling (and not so!) shells, engines, gearboxes, axles, yup, we've acquired it all on ebay.

We have a bit of a joke about how much of my rx7 has been bought from ebay. Its more the general stuff that we have gotten for it. The best bargain we got were 7 set of performace friction carbon metalics pads for $55aud a set, cheaper than oe set brand new.
I am always serching for bits for the car. I purchased a Lambda sensor from belgium a few weeks ago, ended up costing me $30 aud to get it here, a new bosch one is about $250 aud. There are bargains to be had out there, its just getting the time to look. |

I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on ebay, particularly when building the race car, although I have been tucked up on a crankshaft, I have bought a complete LSD diff unit which was fine, hundreds of small bits and pieces, on the whole Its been a very good market place for me

If you look on eBay.com (the American site) there are heaps of motorsport bits, if you want parts for your latemodel dirt racer, or similar......
I have a few bits to put on there, but will see if my private buyer wants everything he says he wants...... As you say though, it's amazing what you can pick up on eBay! There was an ex-BTCC Vectra shell on there recently, went for 2K!! So is it a challenge then - a race car built from bits bought off eBay - maybe something for the Top Gear or 5th Gear mob to do on TV! |

I bought a complete set of second size overbore pistons for my Jag engine on ebay (the biggest allowed by my race regs). They were in good condition and cost just £15
Now all I have to do is find some piston rings to fit them, take the engine out, strip it and have it rebored, the put it all together and retune the carbs to take advantage of the bigger displacement |

I got a brand new set of +20 Jaguar pistons and rings for £80 on ebay. I didn't need them but they were such a bargain I couldn't resist.

my best ebay buy was a set of triple weber dcoe's on an inlet manifold for £37!!!!
best sell? probably an escort airbox lid that my mate threw in the bin, that sold for £117. but not every thing sells for what you'd expect, things often seem to make stupidy high or low prices. i can never work out second chance offers though, nobody has ever taken me up on one, even though quite often they only lost out in the origonal auction by about 50 pence |

if your struggling to get them try thorntons in shrewsbury 01743 357081 they buy up old stock pistons, bearings and such like, and often can supply what you cant get anymore |

I can probably answer that Graham - as a matter of principle I wont buy second chance as I feel i have been spoofed up in the bidding - bit cynical i agree but it still sticks in the throat a bit!

i can sort of see where your coming from, but on the same hand cant see why bidders wont, when the amount is only what they were prepared to pay in the first place, in many cases the first buyer doesn't complete or as i have found out the hard way that if you have more than one of an item you and you list both at the same time you tend to get crap low bids on both, so if i have duplicate items i will only ever list them one at a time

we had this discussion in the week (over a pint obviously) and came the the conclusion it could be a mate upping the bids so check the history of both parties, otherwise why not if your happy with the deal
I have without doubt bought at least a whole car and more in bits on Ebay, although the race car has new stuff (all safety bits for example) I even got an aluminium bonnet skin brand new, a rare find anytime, and I accidentally bought three sets of Dunlop Alloys as well ! |

these aren't like Shaguar ones, theyre The 1967 Dunlop D1 alloys . . .a type of 8 spoke silver/black. . . .makes a change from Minilite copies like all the other old Ford racers and theyre genuine period wheels.
I'd like a set of Lotus Wobblywebs one day but I'm not selling the house for them theyre about 350 each !! |

>>>>>>>>>>>How can you possibly buy ... by accident
Easily. It's how I ended up buying a compressor instead of selling an air wrench. It's called "ALCOHOL". LOL M |
