Sainz to retire?

Carlos Sainz has said he may retire if there is no Ford/Hyundai deal!

Well, is it better to jump or to wait until you are pushed? I hope someone picks him up though, I would miss him if he were not out there.

He seems pessimistic over a new Ford deal. I would think he would be picked up for a management position or even his own junior team.

if Carlos retires there'll be some unfinished business... he should have at least one more world title...

Does he mean it? Or is it a negotiating ploy?
Time will tell I suppose.

Personally, I hope he stays with Ford.

Times getting tight for Carlos re; which team if any, he will be driving for in 2003. It's now only a week before the FIA’s driver registration deadline for next year’s World Rally Championship.

Budgets for Ford & Hyundai have yet to be approved by the relevent companies.

It's looking less likely that Carlos will be in the WRC next year as Hyundai have announced that it will run two cars in 2003 for Freddy Loix and Armin Schwarz, with a third car possibly run on selected events.

Ford still want to keep him if budgets allow. (Now taking what Jag are saving after releasing Irvine...??)

Carlos is still good, but his skills are in decline, and rookies like Loeb, Martin and Duval are making him look very over-the-hill.

Hang up the helmet while you can do it on _your_ terms, Carlos.

About the Huyndai situation: Schwartz should go, he is slower than both Loix and Kankkunen (who turns 44 next year).

I'd rather see McRae get shifted out than Sainz. Here's hoping Ford comes up with something ...

Bad news, Hyundai will go with two cars of Loix and Schwartz for next year because of budget constraints. Carlos is joining Eriksson for out of rides list.

Hyundai has gone about this who program in completely the wrong way. Hiring old drivers, underdeveloping the car...

Of course, Hyundai's problem is always horsepower... It seems they just don't know how to get good power from their engines.

I can't imagine Rally without Sainz. The rest of them look like babies next to him! (Okay, they ARE babies next to him.)

Well let's hope he does get a drive next year. If he can come third in the championship (one point behind 2nd) driving a Focus, then he certainly isn't ready to retire yet..... at least no more so than that other overpaid Ford driver (the one who's now going to Citroen).

I just had a vision of Louis Moya as McRae's co-driver.

Someone surely will hire Sainz and Moya, they are worth the entire Mitsubishi Ralliart team as presently constituted!

According to BBC Online, Citroen are doing the sums to see if they can afford to run a fourth Zsara with Sainz... a decision later this week.

This seems to be linked to the situation re; driver nominations for points. (see related thread)

“If the regulations stay the same for 2003, we push hard for three cars, because it is 33% chance more to have points, but for sure I prefer two cars for the budget,” said Citroen Sport chief Guy Frequelin.

This may seem kind of F1, but do they have pay drivers in Rally? I mean, Carlos is the highest paid athlete in Spain, doesn't he have money to run a car?

I dunno. The only option right now is Citroen. Really, seeing how he finished ahead of McRae, Makinen, Burns and etc. I can't believe how they want him to retire...

Surely Carlos doesn't trash as much cars as McRae does!

Good point Liz!

There have been a few in recent years who have entered privately (can't remember any off hand - Delecour? Some of the "older" Fins?)...

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sainz turned out in his own Focus.

I'd have thought that they'd be enough Spanish companies that would like to be associated with Carlos and that funding could be put together to supplement Citroen's monies at least

I just heard from a Finnish motorsport tv-magazine, that Citroën will have Sainz funded for 7 rallies and Sainz's sponsors are covering other seven, so it will be a full program for Carlos.
