Number of tyre grooves

This might seem like a pretty simple question, but, how many grooves are allowed on a tyre?

im wondering if the rules have changed between the seasons, because usually there are 4 grooves on the front, and 4 on the rear.

Explain why there are 5 grooves on the front, and 3 at the rear on this picture.

Is it just something Michelin are testing for some reason.
Maybe are the regulations 16 in total?

And this picture is from testing, not from a GP

Maybe someone has photoshopped them.

There is no change to the tyre regs this year, so there is no reason why they should be running different spec tyres, my theory is someone has just been messing around in photopaint.

Although a year ago I believe there was talk of the FIA putting a 5th groove in the tyres for the 2002 season after the tyre war of 2001 saw lap times drop.

I don't think that it's doctored either. Rules regarding tyres have not changed. Anyway. Another interesting thing is that the grooves on the rear tyres are not "arranged symmetrically about the centre of the tyre tread" as Article 77) says.

There are two of those pictures from the recent test at Valencia...both McLaren...they don't show any of the Williams' wheels.

I don't think it was 4-4: I'm pretty sure that there has been a difference between front and rear. Didn't think there were 5 though...

The number of grooves changed in 1999 after they tried 3 in the front and 4 in the rear. It then changed to 4 in the front and 4 in the rear.

Well in 1998 the grooves were:

3 front
4 rear

In 1999 it was

4 front
4 rear

and has been the same since.

It's probably a wet/intermediate compound.

The most likely explaination for this is that the tyres are actually wet or intermediate tyres being used on installation type runs. The tyre rules have not changed so the rules still state that there must be 4 front and 4 rear grooves. It has certainly thrown up some interesting thoughts for us though. Note: the driver is a young British guy Paffert or something like that and he would be a fair way down the McLaren testing tree in terms of important go fast bits being tested. This ties in with the thought that he is doing instalation type laps where pure performance is not the aim and it may even have been early in the day with some parts of the track still a bit wet. All of the main drivers at the test drove on normal dry tyres.
