I was lucky enough to be the Motorsport UK Steward and for me it really was the best meeting for a number of years. The grid for the main race was awesome, well done to everyone involved.

Am I correct in thinking that there were no contact accidents in any of the qualifying and races? Disregarding the contacts with the scenery of course.

One would hope that this was correct. It is, after all, supposed to be a non-contact sport!

Accidents do happen and Silverstone does tend to have its fair share.

There was an excellent DP214 replica in the race. Also three MGB replicas, not to mention some replica Mustangs, Cobras and Falcons. As long as they had HTPs I don't see a major issue.

Changeable weather in the morning made for some interesting lines in qualifying, add to that a need to change spark plugs in my stint and a couple of safety car periods, none of us really go to grips with the car. Tim has never driven the MG so I went out to bed in new brake pads, planning to do three laps only. The first lap was scuppered due to an Elan in the old pits wall so we all came back in. Good for the pads but when the lights went green my car wouldn't start so we changed the plugs and off I went. A further lap on a very greasy track and an in lap was all I got.

Tim took over and after his first lap the safety car appeared, he put some times in with a best lap of 3:12 which put us 56th of 58 cars. Ken was a bit slower than Tim but both were much faster than me. Hey ho.

We put Tim in the car for the first stint and he made some great progress, best lap was 2:52.8, the best MGB lap was 2:49.4 so not bad for a first time in the car. At the end of the first hour we were 34th. Then Ken got his turn and we were 45th when, ten minutes before the end of his stint he came into the pits sadly to retire. Head gasket. This is a recurring theme with the car and I'm not sure what we can do, but it is rebuild time so we can check the block and the head and take the necessary action.

Although I didn't get to drive in the race I had an exciting day. We were pinged in qualifying for a non working transponder. Unsurprising really, because it was, at the time, in the office at home! So, a quick trip home and back whilst charging the transponder in the car and we were good to go! Phew!

Thanks should go to MRL for organising what was a great event, which although we all hope will never be needed again, would be a great way to complete the season. Also to the RAC for providing coffee and snacks to one and all throughout the day.

It still does not seem right that a car built (& entered) as a2017 car can win a race for Pre 1966 cars.

They paid the entry fee and grid needed filling!
MRL , one of the best Brit organisers, have to survive the year on two meetings both put on at the last minute !
Overheads need paying.
Hopefully back to normal next year with no specials or copies in any of their series.
On second thoughts there would be no racing as copies are found in all series and all organisers need the money including gang near Chichester.

Of course my point concerning the MGBs is relevant to your point. Mine was built in 2011 but entered in pre 66. As John says, no dishonesty and it was a good addition to a grid which needed filling. I liked the colour too.

The point about recently built cars is complicated. My FIA B was built from a 1965 shell in about 2003 but it could be built as many recent ones are from brand new shells. They may have a "correct" period log book because thousands were made
The Aston is a completely new car which is surely slightly different if very nice.

Nope its the same as building an MGB from a 1965 shell as is mine. We are only recreating what the works did in period. I realise it gets foggy but for me, if an individual builds a replica then it's fine, if a manufacturer builds a replica then I have a problem because they call them continuations which patently they aren't.

Not so many manufacturers build replicas or continuations IMO. I imagine there's a huge gap between a replica built by an individual and an other built by a specialist using modern tools and techniques.

And Chevron,Lola ,GT40 Ferrari,etc etc
Think we have been here before for people with long memories!

Something like 14 out of 16 GT40’s at Spa 6 hours were copies!

On reflection why race a proper car when you can have a copy at a tenth/twentieth of price in some cases.

I have totally changed my stance on both Goodwood and Copy cars.
Suppose it’s getting very old and being involved in fifty years of messing around Historic's.
There were two very historic Elites at Goodwood.
One of them got involved in someone else’s incident and suffered substantial damage.
A copy of that car to go alongside the real one would have been so much easier for owners to live with.( could have one of those lightweight bodies that many of others have!)
