Research into trackside rescue units

THE Motorsport Safety Fund (MSF) has enlisted Sheffield Hallam University’s help for a thorough evaluation of the equipment used by trackside rescue units.

University engineering student Richard Abrahams is to take a detailed look at the equipment British Rescue Units are required to carry, together with additional equipment that a number of them carry and new equipment that is becoming available.

He will talk to rescue specialists and members of the UK motorsports community about their views and assess the equipment currently in use. His research will include reporting on equipment that may have been superceded by recent developments and addressing the future for rescue equipment.

Richard will be canvassing members of the motorsports industry for their views and would welcome input from anyone who would like to contribute to this research. He will be using a questionnaire to gather opinion during the research process and is inviting anyone who would like to participate in his study to submit contact details by e-mail to richard.d.abrahams@student.shu.ac.uk

Could I suggest you e-mail this article to the relevant centres of BRSCC, BARC, 750 Motor Club and the myriad of Rescue Units run by the rally guys. I am sure they would be more than willing to help in this matter?

For the BRSCC go to www.brscc.co.uk and I believe the BASRC is www.barc.net

Thanks for the replies. If anyone would like to contribute to the research, I have some copies of the questionnaire that I could mail to you along with a reply paid envelope

I've also got a pdf version that I can e-mail if that's easier for you

If you send me a PM with your details, I'll get one in the mail to you asap

SJ

If you can e-mail a form to cgilligan@eurologic.com I can give you info on the two Southern Ireland based MSA licensed race units.

Just a thought.....

Just a thought,
as training days are just around the corner, equipment can be seen in use in close up and all its glory,no better way than to assess its working practices dont you think ?

Excellent point Rick.

Mr Spode, maybe you could get Richard to contact the organising club closest to you and ask if it would be possible to attend training days where you should get more information, and first hand to boot!

BARC are arranging a training weekend for marshals at Thruxton on the 16 and 17th of Feb when the rescue units will be carrying out demonstrations of the equipment carried. This might be a good opportunity. Another weekend is scheduled on the 2nd and 3rd of March which is intended to encourage prospective rescue crew by giving interested marshals the opportunity to try out some of the rescue equipment and techniques used by the rescue units. Further information is available from Martin Hunt (teletubby) or contact Karen Coddington (Marshal Secretary) at BARC Thruxton.
