Japanese "F20" series announced ... wacky rules!

http://www.racecar-engineering.com/n....html#comments

Interesting set of technical rules, not sure if it belongs here as it features both open and closed wheel cars. Quick, can we get a Eurofighter engine to go through a 20mm restrictor?

This category is not for the driver but for the backyard car builder.
It is a free regulation though the 20mm air restrictor and the carbon monocoque are obligated to be used.
This race series was planned to increase Japanese manufacturer's business by JMIA(Japanese Motor-racing industry assosiation).
It is planned that the race participant does the production request to the member enterprise of JMIA.

This engine is an engine for F20 that Tom's developed.
One-liter engine of Yaris is a base.
It is made to dry sump.

JMIA developed the engine for a formula race for oneself.
Any automobile maker is not taking part in the development of this engine.
This engine has the rigidity that the stress mount is possible.
The lubricating oil pump and the water pump are built into this engine.

Engine name is TR-FX01.

I like the idea. Looks like a lot of fun. It'd be great if one of the bigger magazines could do a report on it, once the season starts, and present some cars and teams in more detail.

wow, very interesting championship, the rule set regarding the engines reminds me of something in the same vein as group C, nice simple rules, hopefully we will see some real fire breathing, ear shredding monsters in this championship.

JMIA explains that the size of restrictor of 20mm is suitable for the engine of 800-1000cc.
The price of the monocoque is about 1,220,000 yen.
The price of the engine made of Tom's is about 800,000 yen.
They plan to hold the race series in 2010.
It is likely to become rival series of Formula SAE.

This is the JMIA homepage. (But English page is not found.)

JMIA announced the comparison table of the monocoque.
http://car.jp.msn.com/new/photo.aspx...hoto=4?genre=3
The outline is as follows.
S-FJ(Japanese local category) tubular space frame, 64kg, 600,000yen.
F4(Japanese local category) aluminum monocoque, 48kg, 1,350,000yen.
F-Renault CFRP monocoque, 46kg, 2,000,000yen.
F3 CFRP monocoque, 46kg, 3,500,000yen.
JMIA CFRP monocoque, 48kg, 1,220,000yen.

The JMIA monocoque is cheaper than the aluminum monocoque. (And, it is of course safer!)
The monocoque of JMIA is affordable because it is manufactured without placing the aluminum honeycomb.
So, it is manufactured by the method of wrapping carbon fiber around the type.
This monocoque is a 100% pure carbon monocoque, not "Sandwich" structure. (But, it is a little heavy.)

I agree that this is what racing needs. I would also like to see the same idea applied to some larger cars. I've been hoping for something like this.

The demonstration running of F20 was performed in Suzuka.
F20 of Dome became the new livery.
This livery is the same as NSX of Super GT.
The price of the F20 machine of Tokyo R&D will be about five million yen.

JMIA hopes other local formula categories (like S-FJ,F4, FCJ) adopt this monocoque.
This economical CFRP monocoque will reform local formula categories of Japan that use a tubular frame(F4, S-FJ).
This will lead to the industry reorganization of the Japanese motor sport constructors.
If their plans go well, JMIA might become a constructor community that has global competitiveness in the future.

The F20 series was discontinued.

To make their business, JMIA(Japan Motor-Racing Industry Association) planned the F20 series.
However, the use of the carbon monocoque will be admitted from next year in the Formula 4 series that is a local formula category of Japan.
Then, JMIA decided to develop the vehicle for the Formula 4 series instead of the F20 series.
To my regret, the F20 series was discontinued.
