I was watching "Murray walkers f1 greats" last night and it hit me, What is the best partnership between a driver and mechanic/team boss/race engineer ever?

Ithink Jackie and Ken. 3 WDC's in that time is great. But why not TGF and Ross? Because TGF's Car is by far the best!!!

But wouldn't that strengthen the argument to have them as the best? Surely a strong combination would give themselves the best equipment possible (such as Clark and Chapman)?
In any case, Schuey has not always had the best car, yet Brawn's tactics and Michael's driving have always kept them in contention or thereabouts. As for the poll, I can't decide at the mo, but shouldn't Lauda and Montezemelo be on there too? |

Mansell and Williams They certainly acheived a lot, but partnership might be a strong word
I went for Clark and Chapman. However the Tyrell one was close for me. The fact that it is so much more a team effort works against the current Schumacher-Brawn pairing. OK it was always a team effort, but before you could nail it to a principle designer and driver pair. With the excellent Ferrari lot we have now you'd really have to say Schumacher-Byrne-Brawn-Todt-Montezemolo. There is a slight mix of roles up there from the team point of view. Engineers to team principles and some inbetween. Other suggestions: Prost and Barnard? Brabham and Cooper? Lauda and Montezemolo? Last edited by Adam43; 24 Feb 2004 at 21:29. |

You made it too easy. Jim Clark, the finest driver ever to walk the face of the planet, and Colin Chapman, probably the most inventive brain ever to turn its attention towards Formula 1.
Just think, Jimmy would only have been sixty-eight this year... Last edited by BSchneiderFan; 25 Feb 2004 at 00:16. |

Clark - Chapman. They complimented each other so well. Schumacher - Brawn misses out for the above stated reason that Byrne and others had more to do with it, in my opinion. But despite that, they'd be second.

I would have thought Alain Prost along with Ron Dennis and Gordon Murray would have taken some beating.

Easily Clark and Chapman. They complimented each other so well they made winning look simple. They were boss-employer but they were also best of friends...

Another Clark and Chapman vote for the reasons already mentioned as well as the fact that it wasn't just F1, they raced in Indy, F2 and touring cars as well. Such a shame that the modern F1 driver can't diversify in the same way.

clark/chapman.....i don't know, i just can't seem to think that the other partnerships though good, and in some cases excellent, match up to the 'magic' of jimmy and colin....

Yeah, gotta agree with 31.11% of the people, Michael and Ross are a very powerful unit. BUT, one of the things that makes this combo strong is Rubens Barrichello. He should have been brought into the equation.

After recently seeing the Colin Chapman video "If You're Not Winning, You're Not Trying", the rapport, the warmth and the good grace and humour with with Chapman conducted himself in working with his two drivers Emmo and Ronnie Peterson is a cornerstone of a previous era, if nothing else.

As much as i hate to admit it, cos even though i don't think he's clearly better than anyone else (he's just jad everything in his favour..always!)
It's gotta be Schu and Brawn....six titles? come on people that'll never be beat! Unless either Kimi or Alonso begin their quest with a first title this year!! |
