Markko Märtin should take some lessons in sporting etiquette
Markko Märtin should take some lessons in sporting etiquette. On yesterday's SS2, he had two rear punctures, and Petter Solberg caught up to him. Petter said he could have been half a minute quicker had he not been stuck in Märtin's dust, but Märtin refused to pull over to let the faster Solberg through. Petter said: "I had Markko Martin in front for [such a] long time. He didn't want to pull over. My helicopter asked him five times."
This in stark contrast to World Champion Richard Burns' behaviour on SS3 when he was having problems. Tommi Mäkinen said: "It's not particularly hard for the car at the moment. We lost a little bit behind Richard but he was very good to let me go." Markko Märtin should take a leaf out of Burns' book. The Estonian really needs to learn how to show more consideration for his competitors. (Both quotes are taken from www.worldrallynews.info.) |

Overall I have been very impressed with Martin...I particularly like that stage with no notes and he still ran fourth..
We had a few cases of guys being held up in the dust. |

Apparently according to the TV coverage here in the Uk, there is an agreement between the crews that if they stopped/ slowed due to mechanical problems they would pull over, whereas if it was a puncture and they got going again then they would not pull over, as they could get back up to racing speed again.
So therefore Tommi should have pulled over for Colin, but he kept Harri R behind him on the 2nd leg because he'd managed to get the wheel fixed in time. I think the agreement is fair enough; otherwise one puncture will lose you the rally not just 3mins |

The reason Tommi did not pull over was because of radio problems. He lost contact with his helicopter. He explained the situation to Colin after the stage, and Colin seemed to understand and accept Tommi's explanation.
