Of current drivers (and with kind of a prototype bias 'cos I get a little more excited about prototypes than GTs)
Tom Kristensen Allan McNish David Brabham JJ Lehto James Weaver Sascha Maassen Andy Wallace Emanuele Pirro Johnny Herbert Dindo Capello If he was getting enough mileage these days, Stefan Johansson would be on/very near the list. He's not lost it. Up-and-coming - Robin Liddell, Pat Long, Marc Lieb, Lucas Luhr. If you asked me the same question in 12 months I'd love to be able to put Robbie Kerr on the list - one stunning performance doesn't get you on the list though. |

19dodge, I like your top 4. In no particular order:
Joao Barbosa is looking good in the Rollcentre Dallara, Tommy Erdos in the Saleen Johnny Mowlem is a brilliant Porsche driver Thomas Biaggi in the Ferrari Tom Kristensen in the Audi Andy Wallace Currently Zytec Chris Dyson (ALMS - Lola Aer) Tim Sugden BGT & ALMS Stefan Ortelli Porsche Stuggling with a tenth person so 'll leave it at 9 |

Some very good GT drivers in Jason's list, I must admit that I was heavy on prototype guys. Surprised nobody's mentioned Ron Fellows or Jan Magnussen yet, on the GT side...
(and you can drink a pint of Bovril, but that reminds me of a long Billy Connolly joke about "fitba' violence" ) |

How anyone can leave Tom Kristensen out of their top ten is beyond me!
And Davies ahead of McNish? Maybe watching different races! |

OK, Andy Wallace is my number one. As far as I know, he's the only one to race ALL of the best cars of the 21st century (RFH Dome, Speed 8, R8, MG Lola, DBA Zytek). Here's my other nine in no particular order:
Leitzinger- flies in anything Borchellar-9 championships in nine years, or is it 8? Gavin-best in the Vette stable Werner-fastest in the R8 in rookie year Kristensen- 6 Le Mans wins Pirro-IMO, the most consistant R8 driver Pruett- fast in anything Magnussen-fast in anything Bourdais-fast in anything |

Kristensen
Lehto Magnussen Luhr Maassen Ortelli Enge My ideal team (if I wanted to win Le Mans) would be Lehto, Kristensen and Ortelli. (assuming in this world I am not allowed to have Schumacher, who I am not a fan of, but...). |

Top 10 Sportscar drivers today:
1. Kristensen for sure #1. 2. Magnussen, when the going gets tough there is no one better! 3. McNish perfect endurance driver 4. Pirro "" 5. Herbert "" 6. Lehto "" 7. Wallace "" 8. Collard No one is faster. 9. Maassen, great GT driver, needs a prototype chance. 10. Luhr, almost as good as Maassen. Will be at the top of this list in 5 years! Sorry, but I don't rate Ortelli that highly. I don't think he is anything special....... To win Le Mans, I'd have 2 cars. 1st: Magnussen, Kritensen & Lehto to run flat out. 2nd: McNish, Herbert & Pirro to run 90%. Last edited by Fiorentina 1; 18 Aug 2004 at 06:51. |

For me it is:
1) Alan McNish - The record books would be different if he hadnt gone to Formula one 2) Tom Kristenson 3) JJ Lehto 4) Johnny Herbert 5) Andy Wallace 6) Butch Leitzinger 7) Sebastian Bourdais 8) Pirro 9) Pierre Kaffer - Early days but is looking extremely useful 10) James Weaver After another few races then you could well see Robbie Kerr join this list! Slightly off track, but are Maassen, Collard and Ortelli on long term porsche contracts? It would be such a waste if we didn't see Ortelli in a prototype again or if Sascha and Emmanuel never got the chance.

Ok, heres my top 10, but in no particular order, all current drivers, if it was for past racers then it would include the likes of Icxx, Redman etc.
1) Tom Kristensen, 2) Allan McNish, 3) JJ Lehto, 4) Andy Wallace, 5) James Weaver, 6) David Brabham, 7) Ron Fellows, 8) Johnny O Connell, 9) Johnny Herbert, 10) Butch Leitzinger. It was hard to pick a top 10 only, it was also very difficult to not include Jan Lammers, Frank Biela, Dindo Capello, E Pirro. But that would have been a top 14 |

Taking people's lists, and scoring the top driver as 10, 10th as 1.... (using a flat 5.5 for "no particular orders), I get the following "Top 20"
93 Kristensen 86 Wallace 72.5 McNish 53.5 Lehto 48.5 Herbert 40.5 Weaver 31 Magnussen 29 Brabham 28.5 Leitzinger 25.5 Pirro 18.5 Maassen 16 Ortelli 15.5 Werner 14.5 Bourdais 13.5 Enge 13.5 Luhr 11.5 Fellows 11 Gavin 10 Angelelli 10 Pruett Seems like everyone rates Wallace but I'm amazed at how low Brabs is scored! |

Wallace is just behind Kristensen for me, but only just. Given the same chances in the same equipment, I would have expected him to net similar results.
I'm reasonably happy with that composite list, although I'd probably rate Pirro higher and I'ds want to see Capello on it - there are several drivers there who aren't in the same league as him. For me, Brabs is about right. Just hasn't had enough exposure in top notch machinery....... |
