2007 Budweiser Shootout @ Daytona [Spoiler Warning]
With the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup haulers roll into Daytona today the start of the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season has come so close you can almost hear the roar of engines in the distance.
2007 is a year of change for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, with plenty of drivers moving to different teams, a new manufacturer coming in, a new car being introduced and both the points system and the playoffs, the Chase, being tweaked. Some of the effects of all these changes won't be seen until much later in the year while others, like how the Toyota Camry stacks up against the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, the Dodge Charger and the Ford Fusion, will be seen in just a few days time. I am, of course, thinking about the unofficial start of the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season: the Budweiser Shootout. The following 21 drivers are eligible to take part in the 2007 Shootout: Greg Biffle (2 poles in '06) Jeff Burton (4 poles in '06) Kyle Busch (1 pole in '06) Kurt Busch (6 poles in '06) Dale Earnhardt Jr. (0 poles in '06; won the 2003 Shootout) Bill Elliott (0 poles in '06; won the 1987 Shootout) David Gilliland (1 pole in '06) Jeff Gordon (2 poles in '06; won the 1994 & 1997 Shootouts) Denny Hamlin (2 poles in '06; won the 2006 Shootout) Kevin Harvick (1 pole in '06) Dale Jarrett (0 poles in '06; won the 1996, 2000 & 2004 Shootouts) Jimmie Johnson (1 pole in '06; won the 2005 Shootout) Kasey Kahne (6 poles in '06) Mark Martin (0 poles in '06; won the 1999 Shootout) Ryan Newman (2 poles in '06) Scott Riggs (2 poles in '06) Elliott Sadler (1 pole in '06) Boris Said (1 pole in '06) Ken Schrader (0 poles in '06; won the 1989 & 1990 Shootouts) Tony Stewart (0 poles in '06; won the 2001 & 2002 Shootouts) Brian Vickers (1 pole in '06) Misc Stuff/Stats Dale Jarrett and Brian Vickers will give Toyota their first taste of some real NEXTEL Cup competition when they take the green flag behind the wheel of their Toyota Camrys. David Gilliland will make his first start in the Budweiser Shootout, and he is also the only driver with no previous starts in the event. Bill Elliott will make his 22nd start in the Shootout this year. In his previous 21 starts he has completed a record 727 laps, which also happens to be every single lap of all the previous Shootouts he's taken part in. He made his first start in 1982, before Brian Vickers and Kyle Busch who will take part in this years' event were even born. The all-time Budweiser Shootout winner is Dale Earnhardt Sr., who won the race 6 times in 12 attempts. Race Info The race consists of 70 laps in total, split into two segments. After the first 20-lap segment there is a 10-minute break during which the teams are allowed to make regular pit stop adjustments to the cars. The break is then followed by the second segment, a 50-lap Shootout to the checkered flag. The total purse for the event is $1,153,518, with the winner collecting a cool $215,000. My pick for the win: Dale Earnhardt Jr. It's about time he finds his way back victory lane at Daytona. TV Info I don't know the TV-times in other countries, but in Sweden the race will be televised live on Viasat Sport 3. The broadcast is scheduled to begin at 02:00am CET during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Australian Viewers: 12PM Sunday Afternoon Fox1, with highlights @ 8pm that night, and a full replay monday morning. Last edited by Hazza; 8 Feb 2007 at 10:01. |

I'm going for Earnhardt. But In reality, I think it will be Kahne.

Both the Busch brothers will be up there at the end of the shootout, it's a short race and both know how to be aggressive... Both also did well in the last Daytona race (Kyle 2nd and Kurt 3rd I think). I think Kurt will win.

Times like these I really wish the 10-minute editing rule didn't exist...
"With the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup haulers roll into Daytona today" should obviously be "With the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup haulers rolling into Daytona today" and "It's about time he finds his way back victory lane at Daytona." should be "It's about time he finds his way back to victory lane at Daytona." Bleh, I have to stop making long posts during busy hours at work. |

Toyota's NASCAR debut is already more impressive as their F1 history. |

God, that rendition of the US national anthem was TERRIBLE. Leave the National Anthem singing to Military Personnel ONLY.

Wasn't a bad race, a LOT of cars getting loose, would have been interesting to see how it would have gone if there wasn't that caution with 15ish to go. Well done to Stewart, and Gilliland is looking good.
They didn't make much of it, but Hamlin got hit HARD at the end, car got a fair bit of air. |

Not a bad race - it wasn't as good as last year's awesome battle, but not bad. Congratulations to Stewart - just three more Shootout wins to match Dale Sr. now
