British GP-Marshals Pit Lane Walk

The GP provisional timetable shows a Marshals Pit Lane Walk Friday 19.15 - 20.00(TBC).If it goes ahead,so a few suggestions to ensure this happens every year.
Pit marshals will be on extended duty to help the the pit walk happen for the enjoyment of fellow marshals so the same rules should really apply.
Scrounging from teams is a no no.Officials have been dropped from the GP list because of this activity.
No smoking is the accepted rule throughout.
No alcohol might be best.
Staying the pit lane side of the team barriers is good idea,it gives the teams sufficient work space without hinderance.
The F1 paddock is a no go area.We all have to accept that.
The pit wall usually has a lot of team electronics,we should all really stay away from it,just for the aviodance of any "issues."
Lets hope (TBC) becomes reality.

I totally agree. If it goes ahead can those people please, please some restraint, and not hassle teams, drivers etc...

In the eyes of the Fia we are a nesseary evil so lets not give them any reason to dislike us anymore.

does anyone know whether marshals guests will be allowed to go on the pitwalk. i hope so as im using my dads spare ticket because this is my 1st year marshaling

My understanding is that given the numbers involved it will be Marshals only and not their guests for this year.

It's just another meeting with another set of cars and teams.
The more you suck up to them - the worse it'll get.

By all means behave yourselves.......I guess you would anyway, but remember they need you more than you need them!

Both points of view are valid here - although being sensible is a must. As far as I was aware, the marshals wandering up and down the pitlane caused no harm in previous years (apart from annoying the security personnel) and the teams were happy enough to talk to you if you wanted to ask something

I think major difference compared to previously is this period on the timetable is for marshals only,and we do not have to join in with others.Please also remember that the pit walk is manned by the regular Pit Marshals for fellow marshals.

It is far from another meeting, you have to do what they say when they say it. i believe thats why a lot of people don't do the GP they don't like all the bowing and scrapeing the FIA.

Oh and the other bit has been discussed to death, and IMO they don't.

I have decided against the GP for this year, that is my personal choice, I may be back in the future though.

For the record I am agreeing with Nick and Scorch on this one.

In a way it is sad that Nick has had to say what he has, but then there are always those that spoil it for the rest.

Take the beer at the party in previous years as an example of that.

i do hope this happens, its nice that people are trying to remove some of the elitist feel from the GP. From last year, the teams are quite happy to talk and answer questions as long as you don't stop them doing what they need to. We'll just have to keep our scouse population under armed guard

Well said also Hep...I do have to say when we spoke to the Mclaren guys at the Brooklands Centenary, they were very nice and more than willing to explain things to us as to how things would work, what to do if it had any problems and to take any questions that we had.

Perhaps I could've put it differently.

What I'm trying to get across is that you, the Marshals at this event shouldn't have to feel that a great honour has been bestowed to you by letting you walk up the pitlane.......the same pitlane you are free to walk up and down at any other meeting without any bother.

They're giving you 45 minutes in the evening - and I bet this isn't even a gesture from the F1 people.......more like someone on "Our Side" (BRDC/Silverstone) has arranged it.

Piglet, it does interest me as a matter of fact.......and yes I'm envious of you all who got invited.

Enjoy your evening - and I mean that sincerely (Anyone remember Hughey Green?), but any one of you is, IMHO worth more than what the F1 circus appears to think of us.

Hey guys please lets get back on track.Please save the rights and wrongs of marshalling the Grand Prix for elsewhere.Those who do not wish to do it your choice and have a pleasant weekend.Those who want to but were not invited better luck next time.Those who are marshalling, welcome and enjoy.
Like a work meeting with guests,the housekeeping rules have to be covered for the avoidance of doubt.This ensures we all stick to the same script,and when every one is aware ,is self policing.The pits can be very "sensitive" and alot goes on.
If the Marshals walk happens then you have the option to attend and get up close to the projectiles that hurtle past most of you in noisy blur over the three days,but attendance is not compulsary.
Pit marshals will be extending their very full day to stay on to help make this available to the GP marshals team and will be happy to do so.Enjoy.

Got quite close enough last year when working Copse Inside and having pushed Albers WD down the pitlane, while walking back out someone released the cars too early and Ralf went hurtling past us, after the white limiter line, missing 4 of us including the red shoed Mr Green, by about a meter, no more!
That's close enough for me.

However, it sounds fun.
Thanks to the regular pit lane marshals who it sounds like, have to work longer so the rest of us can have a look. Thanks guys.

I would like to echo others and offer my thanks to the pit lane marshals who are staying so we may enjoy the walkabout. Piglet raises some very good points/etiquette, please don't let a few less well mannered spoil it for the majority.

For the record.... because of the change of timetable the tbc pit lane walk is now 18.15-19.00... and (tabard holders only)

Theres a surprise that the timetable has changed!! I attended the Australian GP in 2001 where I believe they have a pit lane walkabout for marshals every year. As far as I am aware there was no trouble, and in fact it was fairly quiet.

To be fair, most of what Nick has said in his first post is standard practice for all meetings regardless of status. Yes there is a little extra because its F1, but these are not unreasonable requests.
