They were a couple of crazy races! Zampieri got pole, with Campos and Campana all within 0.089 or something. Castellacci and Kamitsakis rounded the top 6.

On the start Zampieri lost out, with Campos Hull grabbing the lead and Campana, Sanchez also getting by Zampieri. Stefanos lost out two places on the start, he overtook Cicatelli on lap 2 and then caught Zipoli as they fought for the magic 6th spot. Two laps from home Zampieri got off circuit allowing Castellacci and Zipoli through, however he recovered just in front of Stefanos and got 6th and another pole. Campos won, his first of the year with Campana and Sanchez on the podium.

Rain was expected sometime into race 2 but it didn't matter one bit to Zampieri who completely disappeared, helped also by the fact that Zipoli was slow but hanging on to 2nd place despite Campana's pressure. Sanchez had a technical problem and was out before the start, while Campos was 5th behind his team mate Castellacci. And then it rained. Campos, Stefanos, Liberati, Glorioso (on top of my head) went for wets but although they were faster, it wasn't a big difference. Zampieri was miles ahead and they only signifficant change was Campana getting by Zipoli. In the end those three filled the podium, Castellacci followed and Cicatelli got 5th, 20 seconds in front of Campos Hull who lost out (albeit marginally in point terms) by risking a tyre change. Stefanos and Liberati were much worse off as they missed the top 10 completely.

Zampieri still leads in the points but he really has to thank luck for not missing out on that 6th spot in the first race. On the upside, he was mega in the second race. Also one has to be impressed by Campana, he has been faultless so far and is rightly in the lead battle.

Guys, you'll have to forgive the ignorance as I haven't seen much of the season and was wondering how everyone thought it went? There was a lot of noise about the series before the year due to Ferrari's continued support, but was wondering how the season has actually gone - is Zampieri very good, or was it a bad field? As I say haven't followed it that well this year, so really just looking for a balanced synopsis...

They had a half decent field in terms of entries and talent, not bad at all I would say?

The big PR for them will be too see how quick the top 3 finishers of '09 go in the F60 in a few weeks time!!

It was quite a quality field this year, practically Zampieri, Zipoli, Campos Hull, Sanchez and Campana were more or less equal in pace. What will make or kill the series though is the team owners, they ask budgets way bigger that Euro F3 Open for no apparent reason.

What's the budget range? I've heard that some teams ask up to 400k, but you could do a season for as low as 200k?

Well from what I understand Spanish and Italian F3 do have some differences although they are both National F3 Championships trying both to have competitive fields:

- In Spain there are only Dallaras whereas in Italy Mygale is also present and quite performing...
- Spanish F3 does not have as much freedom as Italian F3 which might explain cost difference.
- I do not know whether it's the field of drivers or the cars development but the Italian F3 seems stronger than the Spanish: Just an example: Monza Qualy for both Championships:

Pole F3 Spain: Miguez 1'48.323
Pole F3 Italy: Zampieri 1'45.634

- In Spain there are both F308s and F306s: Total Average of 10 - 12 cars of F308 / In Italy there are only F308s: Total average between 16 - 18 cars


Anyway, those were a few facts I could gather.... Hope Zampieri does well at Macau and the Ferrari F1 test. He looks quite promising (Looking at his WS tests and appearance in GP2...).

Isn't the lap time difference due to the series using different engines? It certianly isn't anything to do with the drivers.

The lap time difference could be due to the different engines of course and to the tyres as well although both engines are 1995 cc. The only differences I found are:

Fiat FTP: 1995 cc
7000 rpm
220 CV

Toyota: 1995 cc
7350 rpm
210 CV
Also the minimum weight for the F3 Spanish Championship should be 550 kg and for the F3 Italia Championship it is 565 kg. Maybe that is also another factor to take into consideration....
If any of this is incorrect I would really appreciate a correction as this is what I could find on the web.

The range is as big as you mention because there are no testing ban/rules so you may do a Zampieri (30, maybe more test days) or you may do a Zipoli (no pre season and limited in testing while jumping around teams). This is really stupid for the championship and the same is true for the unlimited development they are allowing in contrast to the ex Spanish series. Of course in reality only certain teams really develop their cars, most use this excuse to ask stupid budgets. Anyway, to explain the lap time difference the last factor are the drivers, I believe in the top both series are equal and as good as any (yes, even BF3 included).
