Then why are Red Bull so slow and still no match for Mercedes, let alone accelerating away from Mercedes? I think both Honda and Red Bull got their targets wrong as to the performance level necessary to win the 2020 championship, otherwise I don't think they would have been so (incorrectly) bullish in the pre-season if they had a more accurate target of where the competition would be at.

I think everyone excepts that the mercedes engine is rather a step up on the others but the discussion was on the Honda/Renault units

My perspective is that coming out of 2019 Honda was probably ahead of Renault. I don't think we have enough data yet to make strong conclusions on Honda vs Renault in 2020 yet. Both seem to perform well (but not in Mercedes territory just yet). The problem is that we are starting to see team/chassis/driver have a larger impact in race results than pure power unit performance. The main exceptions here is generally that Mercedes powered teams do very well and Ferrari powered teams very poorly (there has been a huge step backwards with Ferrari power)

Well it also appears the chassis just crushes the rest out of the corners. Every corner both are on the pedal earlier and firmer than any other car, you could hear Max have to pedal it down the straights late and Lewis was on the power and gone.
