I don't know of any other series where tyres aren't a free allocation for testing. Is it a "cost saving" measure? If so, Penske would like a word...

It is a cost saving measure and there's no evidence that the tyre let go simply because of its age - may well have sliced it on the inside of a kerb or something like that. |

They already cap costs with limiting testing days and they could allow a set number of testing only tyres (maybe 2 to 3 sets) which in the grand scheme of things would be pennies. Regulations which place teams in a position where they're running rubber which isn't only quite old but also a different spec to what they'll be using makes little sense, is frustrating for teams and adds nothing to the spectacle.

Especially as the day meant nothing more than just a shakedown that wasted a test day for everyone. The tyres aren't what is being used so everyone wobbled around on old stock. The day wasn't even much of a season launch because it was on a weekday so most fans can't attend. Was the reason for the test mainly so the Supercars family can have a family catchup and pat eachother on the back before the season starts? Imagine if we had a few tyre brands still involved in the series, a mid-week test like that could have featured some tyre testing and teams doing actual development that will help them during the season.... |

The teams make these decisions as they elect the board members and the board members are team principals. |

I'd love to know of a team who believes this allocation decision is their preference. Trundling around on irrelevant rubber to save 12k a season.

If teams choose to keep and test with supposedly 2 year old, knackered tyres they are doing so out of choice, rather than being "made" to do so. Quote:
A lot of the reason for the test is to get media footage, images etc to be used through the season along with the launch event for media. |

As an engineer I'd just find it incredibly frustrating with more cons than pros, but it is what it is.

The teams sign up for this.
If they don't like the rules, they can lobby to have them changed, or go play in some other sandpit. |

Looks like a couple of dead spots at either end... But then we don't know when this photo got taken in the run with dye. Had they been down the front straight at full noise yet??

Didn’t Mr Wirth famously claim if a designer used CFD they didn’t need real world testing? Wonder how VirginF1 is going these days... or the Acura/Honda ARX05... or the Simtek...

I know he was also responsible for the design work (as you mentioned) on the Virgin F1 car which ended up having a fuel tank too small to fuel the car to last a race. (with no refuelling allowed) |
