Melbourne has been listed as the World's Most Liveable City on a number of occasions (there's some kind of International jury process that ranks cities). It's easy to get around using trams or trains (depending where you want to go) and there are things to experience or see both close to the GP venue or farther out.

This Lonely Planet page may help but there are many other guides online from tourism Victoria and the like.

I've known international visiting friends to find the experience of visiting the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Sports Museum there to be really special. Melbourne is something of a "foodie" city and there are laneways in the CBD choc full of cool and quality cafes etc.

Being a multicultural city, you can stay in Melbourne but experience the cuisine of different countries by going to different areas of the city - Italy, Vietnam, Greece, China, Lebanon and a range of other countries are concentrated in areas of the city - worth doing some Google searching and away you go!

I have mentioned before about the Phillip Island Classic (Historic) meeting which is generally held the weekend prior to the Grand Prix.... (this year strangely it is 2 weeks prior). A three day meeting of over 500 historic cars from around the globe covering every conceivable category involved in 3 full days of qualifying and racing for these cars, with all spectators able to mingle in the pit garages, view from the roof of the garages etc. No special passes required and the owners are very amenable to chatting about their cars. A magnificent weekend and in fact one I visit in preference to the GP. The largest Historic car gathering in the Southern Hemisphere it is our equivalent to Goodwood.

More details of this years meeting here (This year they celebrate 50 years of F5000 racing with a field of 30 F5000's.... quite a sight to watch them all thundering towards T1 at max speed.

Go and see the famous Penguin Parade whilst there.

One of my best friends is very fond of Australia (is a Webber and Ricciardo fan) - has relatives there.
Probably could cound with them if one day could go there.
