C'est très vilain! I remember a race in a skating ring with a GTI of rental and a special passenger, my beloved spaniel cocker!

There are companies providing daily or weekend hire of classics. They tend to be small businesses and seem to be a "car club" of owners who rent their classics out to the hire company for onward rental.

We have one local to us:

https://www.vintage-classics.co.uk/

I post the link for info only, I know nothing about them.

We have at least four of those, one being as you say Max a kind of "club". Never tested one, cant recommend any. Interesting initiative though. One is located on Côte d'Azur, starting price 350€ per day…

Regarding hiring rental cars and using them (or parts) for circuit racing, I remember when I was doing the oval circuits back in the late 60s they used to have "timed laps" for anyone from the audience to participate in. One bloke had hired a Cortina from one of the rental companies at the time and decided that he was going to be the next GP top driver. However he ran out of talent on the first lap and hit one of the support posts on the safety fence. Obviously he was in the s**t regarding the insurance on the car and had it towed up the road and pushed into a tree! I don't know if the hire firm believed him but possibly the insurance company might have done

A mate of my brother's did the same with an Alpine A110 he had just bought in France and entered in a local event in Scotland, but used a dry stone wall rather than a tree

Before I raced I used to do a lot of track days, there were always hire cars there with tape over the number plate.

Did the same more than once, we had several sets of wheels fitted with slicks or wets when the Golf GTI was up to date.

Same happened to me in 2000, stayed on after the Olympics in Sydney and went up to Surfers for the Indy Car race, and the bloke @ Hertz was really apologetic that he only had V6's.

I was happy enough with it, but at the time I had an Escort Cosworth at home which I thought was a division above the Holden.

Remember being slightly miffed when I had a Hertz Thunderbird in the States to discover it only had a V6.....but it was OK, for the time...

I had a few mates who would hire a car for a road rally, but unforunately one of them placed well and the local paper published a shot of him about two feet in the air over a hump-back bridge........ended up with a visit from Plod and a lifetime ban from the hire company

I appreciate that the car makers sell to rental companies their new model to promote it. Better than a test drive at any dealer imo, and in this case the cars are full of available options. This doesn't last for long unfortunately.

We flew to Surfers from Sydney and drove down to Byron bay. this was early 2005. The Holden was a plastic cheap thing, did it's job but not a partcularly pleasant thing. the Falcon was better, but neither screamed quality.

Years and years ago we would use Mallory, Saturdays for a race school. The instructors would hire the cars and we just took the number plates off. Mrs Delta came along one time and at the end of the day I said "jump in and I will take you round the track.".
I can remember pulling out of pit lane and one of the instructors shouted something to me. Stuck two fingers up at him and arrived half way around Gerrards and realized he was trying to tell me the Jerry cans were in the boot,
Happy days.

I happen to know someone who did a half-hour race at Spa with two jerry cans and two deckchairs in the boot a few years ago ... No, it wasn't me ... but I'll save his blushes (not that he's active on here anyway!)

We have a bloke who "discovered" in the weight tunnel that he made the race with a spare wheel and a large bag of tools in the trunk. Makes we wonder if the the driver was loaded too…

Heard a strange noise today. Sounded vaguely familiar but could not immediately place it from memory.

Finally worked out that it's a Bike Track Day at Donington Park.

There is what appears to be a non-Exclusive car test day scheduled for 4th June.

Last year we had a C1 go down the Pit Lane with a green plastic fuel can on the roof on a Trackday. Luckily the cap was on, and the Marshal @ the Pit Exit saw it and stopped the car, he did find it hard to radio me though, because he was laughing so much.

Made a change from the usuals: Mobile Phones, Spanners, cans of Coke etc.

One of my drivers left his mobile phone in his pocket in one race. It went missing of course and a track walk at lunch time found it. He came back also brandishing the missing £15 Allen key that my mechanic *promised* me he hadn't left on the floor tray of a kart
