Mr Coulthard had a braking issue in Adelaide, with a few laps to go.. he knew something was wrong, his team told him to pit... car lost its excellent position.. but the car didnt pitch the pilot into a fence, brake-free either...

From the looks of it, Symmons Plains still needs a bit of work.
Also, why doesn't V8SC use the tighter variation of turn 3? Looks like a good spot to pass if you can get through 1 and 2, two-abreast, and sneak up the inside into 3 under brakes. |

The tighter Turn 3 is for the motorcycles not cars.
this incident would've still happened no matter which turn 3 was used anyway. |

I suspect that we may be overlooking the primary purpose of the barrier and that is to protect spectators. How it interacts with cars is secondary. Important but secondary.

The Armco fence would not take an car impact there is a big drop off behind the Armco. The fence would just fall over.

I know the drifting people use that variation, but I suppose the front of the car is less likely to be pointed directly at that length of armco. |

Exactly right Jim, the race cars and bikes are supposed to keep between the two white lines and the fences and gravel traps are there to protect the marshals and spectators.

If that was the case though why the gravel trap on the left on conrod straight? Actually when i think about Why is it there? Seems more dangerous having it there. |

It was a good idea back in 1987.

Yes & No.
Do you want our tracks to be like modern recently built F1 tracks with huge run off areas and spectators half a kilometre (well not quite) away from the cars. Occasionally cars (& bikes) end up in places they don't normally go and the systems have to protect those outside the car be that spectators like you and marshals like me. |

Agreed.
You can't take into account every possible scenario. Like, who thought it'd be possible for a Suzuki Swift to take a tumble into the Bathurst drive-in theatre? |

http://youtu.be/A37FclYty2M The Drive In was further up the hill though wasn't it?? Also who would've thought a Formula Ford would end where this one did at Calder the day before Lowndes did his big tumble in 1999?? http://youtu.be/MC1IqIKzjS4 |
