Maybe it's time for a seperate "Cheetah Racing Cars" thread.

CHEETAH racing cars

I would like to compile a history on the cars and owners of this most popular and successful Australian racing car.

If you can supply a photo of any Cheetah you have seen, the date of the photo and owner at that time, each car will be compiled into a datafile for the future.

Privacy laws permitting (culling details of owners), this file will be made available over the web for any future research on Cheetahs.

I am also seeking any printed references to Cheetah's in competition magazines or books.

Thanks in anticipation of your help and support,

spook

PS - Yes, Brian Shead is aware of my research project. We talk often.

I have received today the production records (as such) from Brian Shead of CHEETAH Racing Cars.

I will compile them into a suitable format and post a link shortly.

Talking to Trev today after The Terribly British car show....his car has not been sold, it is being repaired after a shunt about this time last year.

A figure in the order of $30K might buy it.....

Trev also mentioned Allan Watts who has about eight Cheetahs!

Rather than lose this, I thought I'd bring this in to the Archive. Anyone care to do an update summary of where we are with these?

One has been done but I've lost contact with the author. He said "Give me 12 hours and I will write the Cheetah intro" on 31 Dec 2005 and I haven't heard from him since

We've got a long, long way with these cars so the wait will be worth it.

Lost in Cyberspace

The intro was written and sent, and I've sent it again (twice), but it seems to be getting lost in cyberspace.

If you could e-mail me direct Allen, perhaps I've got your address wrong.

cheers

Intro to this Thread

Cheetah Racing Cars were designed and constructed by Brian Shead in a small factory at the rear of his home in Mordialloc, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. There were never any employees other than Brian – his was a one-man racing car factory.

The first car was built for his own use in 1960 and two more were constructed in 1962 and 1963. In 1970 he began building a new design and was persuaded to build a second car for a friend and in 1973 he gave up his job to build racing cars full time.

From 1960 to 1989, Brian built a total of 49 cars from the original “Cooper copy” Mk1 to the “Formula Holden” Mk9. He competed in his cars, racing the first of each model up to the Mk7 in 1980, when he retired from racing to concentrate on customer support and manufacturing. From May 1970 to February 1980, Brian raced at 293 events for 112 wins, 228 podium places, 85 fastest laps and 30 lap records – an outstanding competition record.

He is still actively involved in motor sport today, being a long standing member of the CAMS National Track Safety Committee, as well as supplying parts and advice to Cheetah owners.

The car behind Hugh's still races on occasion in NSW.The guys name is Bennett first name escapes me as i ready myself to hop on a plane on my way to Dubbo for a 24 hr kart race. I'll try remember his first name, actually Michael, thats it and the car looks quite different now.....

Oh and ive heard Chris Hocking has his Mk6 back, the one Eric Mills raced circa 86/87. Its in the Martini Colours and was due to run at the Island Historic meet but didnt happen, hopefully Chris will bring it out soon.....

Oh and of course the car Michael owns is pretty easy to work out, its the Grahame Blee machine which was sometime entered as a Cheetah Mk6GE from mem.....

Hi spook

Hadn't managed to reach you by email so I just pushed ahead with this. Let me know if my emails had been vanishing into the ether.

Allen

PS Humble apologies to 275 GTB-4 for being so ill-mannered in the way I asked the question. I hope he will please forgive me.
