How do you Rate Jean Alesi

continuing my 'How do you rate series' on those drivers who had the pace yet probably dont have the stats to show it.... wanted to know how people rate Jean... seemigly was the a future star when he first broke in but never got the right drives... Why? and how good was Jean?

Jean was a very good driver. He had offers from Williams and Ferrari when he first drove for Tyrell.

Great driver, unfortunately followed his heart more than his head.

Coincidentally I've just been watching the DTM reruns on motors TV. Caught Jean's Donington win.

Lovely bloke, great racer but a total failure at the commitment bit. Hence only one GP win.

Alesi was a good driver, who allowed his heart to rule him as opposed to his head, that was why he went to Ferrari as opposed to Williams, and only won his single race.

Japan 1994 was what Alesi was all about, racing wheel to wheel with Mansell. Magic stuff. As was his wheel to wheel with Senna at Phoenix in 1990. (??)

Solid driver, but I don't think his career record is unfair to his ability.

I'm not sure going to Ferrari was all that silly a decision - the team had outperformed Williams the previous year.
He never really dominated Berger, did he? Perhaps had he been teamed with Prost for longer he would have developed further.

Berger usually outqualified him in 94/95.

Jean Alesi.....now there is a classic case of a driver with a massive amount of talent but never had a car under him to really display it. He was an amazing driver to watch always right on the edge...Great driver...Great person

That's my first thought whenever someone mentions his name! The only thing I can say about that race is that it is the ONLY race my mother ever watched - untill that Ferrari broke down! And my mother hated racing of kind.

That is simply the best drive I've ever seen!

Alesi somewhat reminds me of Chris Amon: pure talent but bad luck and wrong choices.

I loved one of his races in the ferrari at the Canadian GP, where he had been blocked by someone that he was lapping in to the bottom hairpin, and gave the other driver the bird, whilst catching and holding a lurid power oversteer moment out of the corner.

Jean was, and is, a great character. I think that his talent deserved more than one GP win. Part of the reason for him not getting more was due to some of the poor choices he made and the poorish cars underneath him.

However, part of it was also down to him not being the all-round complete package. He had great car control, but he also makd some ill-judged moves and wasn't always on the ball as far as strategy goes either (1997 Melbourne was a tad embarrassing). Nevertheless, one of the best of his era, if not at the Schuey level. I'd like to see him in a big, hairy Sportscar!

There's usually a crucial moment in any driver's career and for Alesi it was decision time between Ferrari and Williams.

fought hard, but I think he was too likely to sulk. He wasn't a leader, didn't have a dictator-like personality to get the team around him - I don't think he worked hard enough or had the know-how of what was required to get a team working for him.

I think he was naturally quick, but if he understood the team and the car better he could have adapted his approach and thus been more successful.

But hey, he's a millionaire and a household name, so he hasn't done too badly for himself. The only dodgy thing he did was those hair ads - where he had an American voice-over?!!?!??! You what!?

Thinking American, I think he would be an amazing addition to Champ Cars...

Alesi probably had as much if not more raw talent than Michael Schumacher. However, I don't think that he would have been able to put up similar numbers as Schumacher, because much like the same problem with JPM, he was not really that good at putting the talent to good use race in and race out.

I think the gap lies between talent and appliaction, which is a shame. He deserved more than one win.

That's what stands out in my mind also. He would always be noticable in the wet and would outpace most.
