200 not out?
The US GP held at Indianapolis will see Jean Alesi compete in his 200th GP making him only the fifth driver to do so.
Your starter for ten is who were the other four? and the bonus question is how many more will Jean be in? |

Alesi is one the last drivers generation that we will never see again in the grid. And it's a common sense how he drives as a true racer. I'm honoured to say that I saw when he came into the scene, giving Senna a trouble time and follow him all this time then. I'll be sad if he's leaving, and it seems to be happening, so I'll miss him, but hopefully we will see him getting a seat in a CART team, so we can see how he's going to master the wheels out there... |

And I still want to see him try his hand at endurance sports cars.
But he's certainly not past it. The cars just evolved away from where his natural talents lie. |

Jacques Laffite... was it his 200th start when he crashed, so it didn't count because the race was restarted? Or was that 199?

Ray, Jacques Laffite only made 176 race starts, 175 if you don't include the British GP 1986.

Okay... I must have been willing him on... used to like him a lot. Graham Hill did 199 though, didn't he?
Old, Bononi? How could that be... even my father isn't old yet... Last edited by Ray Bell; 23 Sep 2001 at 23:20. |

Bononi Has it right..allthought Ricardo Patrese stands at 256 and holds the record, One out so not that bad an effort
The Alain Prost one confuses me actually..I have seen 199 and I have seen 200..but if you think back to 1991 and the San Marino GP he spun off on the warm up lap and retired on the spot..now is this counted as a start or not???? there are a few that come to mind like that..Michael Schumacher France 96 , Damon Hill Australia 97...umm thats all i can think of at present. but does anybody know if these races counted as official starts or not ? |

176 starts - therein lies the Graham Hill/Jacques Laffite connection.
Graham was at one time the record holder for Grand Prix starts, and by a huge margin. The Brands Hatch '86 race was the one which would have Jacques Laffite equalling that record. I'll never forget watching Thierry Boutsen's Arrows pirouetting past me, pulling all the sponsors hoardings with it, after it bounced off the tyres, and then watching Jacques' Ligier spearing across the inside of Paddock Hill, before it came to an abrupt head-on stop against the wall. I didn't spectate at Paddock for about 5 years after that. |
