GlobalTV: Better than I'd remembered

Well, as much as I had remembered Global being worse than TSN, I actually think they've improved wuite a bit since last year. They still have issues with showing the wrong pasrt of the action at any given time, and it was really difficult to get a feel for the actual layout of the track.

However, they've always been really good about talking about the technology aspect of CART, the defining characteristic of the series. During qualifying they had a really interesting piece explaining the various functions on the steering wheel. Very cool, I want one! And last year I remember them explaining a lot about the wings and tires. At the same time, I wish they didn't have to take away from the action during these times!

I was going to watch qualifying on Global at 10:30PM EST. just like Cart.com said too, but sure enough it wasn't on.....so I checked the local TV listings on the internet and found out that it was on Global at 7:00PM EST. Thanks for the old screw job one more time Cart.com.... Thank god I listened to it live on Cart.com's Live Audio and Live Timing, but I wanted to see the cars on the telly today.

I watched it on Speed Channel yesterday about 4:30 p.m. Didn't even know it was on Global at all. However, I will enjoy watching it "live" on Global today instead of having to wait til 9:00 p.m. on Speed ... although the ALMS race is also being shown live at 4:00 p.m. ...

NOT YESTERDAY IT WASN'T! It took them six laps to find out that Race Control had ordered Bruno to move over for Tracy -- it had been on the radio and on LT&S for at least that long while Memo Gidley fumbled around wondering aloud about the pass that Tracy made ...

Memo reminded me a lot of Parker Johnstone yesterday. Perhaps he will find a career in commentary, as he's a very friendly and articulate guy.

You guys are lucky to actually be in a position to compare notes on the quality or otherwise of your various TV channels, I was treated to about an hour of various shots of the track and Vancouver's skyline and although it looks like a very beautiful city it came as a blessed relief when they gave it up as a lost cause and went to some boxing. (The black guy won)

We've had much much much worse.... they showed the race from teh opening announcements until the podium ceremonies were complete....we don't get that very often.

The commentators weren't great, but better than Global has had in the past...Memo at least wasn't explaining what a steering wheel was. Also, I was pleased they didn't talk as much as Jeremy Shaw and co. who makes you wonder if he ever stops to breath.

And I was wondering if they ever shut-up. Go figure. But what was with the quirky camera angles? I already know what pavement looks like.

I liked Memo, but I thought Darren Manning was better at Leguna. Maybe they should switch.

Cheers

Yeah, I've got to take back most of what I said. I made those comments after qualifying coverage, which was a decent broadcast desptite mssing most of the on-track action. Race coverage was... poor. Lacked replays of everything. I don't think ever saw what happened to the Coyne cars and it took them ten minutes to show a replay of Tracy's pass on Junqueira, and they didn't even know that race control had told Junky to move over until five minutes after that!. And like Liz said, they had no idea there was a problem when Junqueira jumped the start. Memo was good, but he's better in a car. Still, any coverage is better than no coverage, and pre and post race activities were a rare treat.

Gotta blame the producers more than the commentators.
Both Gidley and McClure know what's up.
The fact that they were not made aware of various situations is not their fault.
Gidley done real good. And Chris McClure has always been one of my favourites.

One good thing I've gotta say is that they did a rebroadcast at half-past-midnight, which was awesome for a guy like me who works afternoons and happens to have a broken VCR!

I'm just thankful that we saw less of Jim Tatti this year than we did last. He's as much of a race fan as he is a synchronized swimming fan. That I can attest to as fact.
