Actually I have asked Newey about the BGP001 diffuser. It was deemed legal so its legal... the 2007 Ferrari was never deemed to have run in an illegal condition - question is why did McLaren not protest?

Could it possibly be because protesting would reveal that they had rather a lot of information about the car?

Never said it was illegal, but when Newey presented his idea of the diffuser to Charlie Whiting he was told it wasn't allowed. So they dropped the idea. That's one of the reasons they protested the cars at the start of the year.

somewhat different version/motives though then what we had heard about back in the day.
iirc the story back in the day was that Stepney and Coughlan were going to take the info to a new team as opposed to Stepney being opposed to winning at any cost and was also surprised that Stepney had shared the info so early in the year (prior to the first race of the year). interesting question. in light of this 'new version' of events my question would go one step further to ask if Mclaren chose not to protest (thereby protecting their source) then did they keep it to themselves in order to integrate it into their own designs? |

Visions of McLaren handing stolen data on CDs over to the FIA as evidence of Ferrari 'cheating'. There ought to be an F1 film/documentary done about it! |
