2002 V8 Supercar Calendar

CARLTON UNITED BREWERIES ENSURE V8 SUPERCARS RETURN TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA


V8 Supercars exciting twelve round 2002 calendar was unveiled today at the V8 Supercar 1000, Mount Panorama with the surprise inclusion of a round at Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia.

Carlton United Breweries has stepped up to the plate and made a significant investment to ensure V8 Supercar fans in Western Australia do not miss out on a round of Australia's premier motorsport category.

Carlton United Breweries Motorsport Manager Peter Gallagher said "While CUB have already committed to a major investment with V8 Supercars we felt it was vital the West Australian public have the opportunity to attend a round of the worlds best touring car championship.

"This announcement compliments CUB's significant investment to West
Australian sport with our "Carlton Mid" sponsorship of WA football and our announcement last week of a ten-year sponsorship of WA Cricket.

"The West Australian market is extremely important to CUB and we are proud to ensure that V8 fans in Western Australia do not miss out on this world-class sporting event.

"CUB acknowledge the support we receive from the West Australian public and are delighted to be able to give something back.

AVESCO recognise this significant investment by Carlton United Breweries will now ensure the many V8 Supercars fans in Perth the chance to attend a round of their favourite sport.

"After the West Australian government refused it's support of the street race AVESCO lost the opportunity to gain the extra revenue needed to sustain the additional costs to the teams in travelling to WA", said AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane.

"Under these circumstances it was not financially viable for us to return to Perth however this generous gesture will enable the people of WA to enjoy the sport they love.

"The success of V8 Supercars in Western Australia is undeniable, V8 Supercar crowds have grown by nearly 40% per cent each year over the past five years.


"This years event saw thousands turned away at the gate as the Barbagallo circuit reached its capacity, a true indication there is a need to stage a much bigger event," said Cochrane.

Both the Shell Championship Series calendar and Konica V8 Supercar Series calendar have had significant changes made to their 2002 championship series campaigns.

The spectacular Clipsal 500 Adelaide event will launch the new twelve round championship series, the extremely popular GMC400 will retain its June long-weekend date, while the pinnacle of Australian motorsport the V8 Supercar 1000 will stay on the weekend pioneered this year which is proving to be a great success.

This exciting 2002 calendar will again feature a greater variety of formats including the extremely popular compulsory pit stops and longer race distances that are a huge hit with V8 Supercar fans.

The rapidly growing Konica V8 Supercar Series reverts back to a five round series with all 2001 promoters extremely keen to secure rounds of the successful V8 Supercar feeder series for 2002.

Geoff Davey, National Marketing and Sales Manager, Konica's Office Document (OD) Company says Konica are delighted with the success of this years Konica V8 Supercar Series and the inaugural 30 lap Konica V8 Supercar Challenge.

"This year's Konica Series has seen a significant growth in popularity," said Mr Davey. "The increased interest in this series by the Australian motorsport public is fantastic.

"We are very excited by the inaugural Konica V8 Supercar Challenge which has created an excellent opportunity for our up-and-coming young drivers to experience one of the most notorious endurance circuit in the world - Mount Panorama!

In 2001 the V8 Supercar category has continued to grow at an enormous rate with Shell Championship Series crowd attendances up by nearly 50,000 people prior to the V8 Supercar 1000 and television audiences attracting nearly half a million (500,000) new viewers.

The Konica V8 Supercar Series boasted increased attendances of an
astonishing 110% while the television audience grew by 31%.

They haven't released it yet.

But expect a law suit over this one....from Phillip Island I believe.

Shhhhh!

....and they'll never go back to Barbagallo

Too bad about Calder....and what about the Bathurst date? I could have sworn someone said they were going back to the long weekend...

BTW- this year much of the Konica series was run before the SCS, but next year they are pretty much running together.

Michael: Don't expect to see any of those countries on the agenda for some years - if ever.

Crash: Well 2 rounds before the official SCS start Rnd 1 - Wakefield 25/2; AGP 4/3, Konica Oran park 18/3 and then SCS Rnd 1 25/3

Crash Test - yes, I do also recall somebody talking about going back to the Long Weekend. That person also said that they had no fear about going head to head with the footy. What has changed? I just can't put a face to the comments...

Yeah, they were meant to Asia in 1997 and many other countries after that. What about that supposed match race with the DTM in 2000, and going to Silverstone in 1999.
