My favourite F1 season was

What was your favourite season and why? All reasons are valid.

(Well it is favourite season of the last 64 years due to a limitation with the poll). Say if you enjoyed one of the first six seasons

1995. Hill and Schumacher locking horns. A great Spa race with Schumacher starting down the grid. Great season. Last time you had 26 cars too.

(I'm only considering the seasons I myself watched unfolding, rather than historic ones which are a different kettle of fish).

Does it have to be in our lifetime? I guess a season like 81 was one of the best. You had so many top drivers, but no clear number one, at least in terms of results. You had Piquet, Jonesy, Reutemann, Prost, Laffite, Villeneuve, Watson, de Angelis, Pironi, Andretti, Patrese. Also the racing was a lot better, no compulsory pitstops, and weren’t even necessary either. Pretty much all the races had something going on and it seems a lot of the drivers had their moment of glory

In my lifetime, I guess seasons like 97, 08, and to an extent 2012 were ones to remember, because different teams were competitive at different circuits, so you had a great mix on the podiums those seasons

At the time I was so excited by the 3 litre formula with fast V8s, V12s, H16s. the cars were still just as fragile, just as dangerous. Sponsors would soon begin to take over and the slow decline into a "formula" really began. The drivers were true heroes and, sadly, so many continued to lose their lives. There was no need to outlaw "thuggish" driving, the risk was just too great.

2003 for me. Lots of good races and a three way fight almost all the way down to the last race. And of course Fisi's win in the Jordan.

1986, 4 F1 greats in good cars all with a chance of winning, Ultimate heartbreak for Mansell, and a surprise WDC win for a dogged Prost.

I saw my first GP in 1971 and no season came close to 1986 . It isn't about races to the title , but , if it were , 1976 would be the one as the Hunt /Lauda duel was mesmerising .

But 86 was the last year of totally bonkers 1.5litre turbos (still good in 87 , more house trained in 88 ) and to witness close up such cars were simply astonishing. 1000bhp plus , steel brakes , stick shifts, not very good aero , massive surplus of power over grip and frequent blow ups .

But 89 came close - such exquisite looking and fantastic sounding cars . We had V8s , V10s and V12s - and what a contrast that is to the virtual spec formulae we have been saddled with since the advent of those horrid little 2.4 V8s .

1982, although the loss of Gilles Villeneuve and Ricardo Paletti were a big dark cloud over that year, but still so many different race winners that year, it just seemed that almost anyone could win a race that year.

I think your answer here is misunderstanding the question a little bit.

If the question was 'what was the best F1 season ever' then your answer might be more appropriate.

I'm interested to see how people respond to this thread - but more for the personal reasons behind the favourite season rather than why the season itself was good.

For me, my favourite season in F1 was 1994. Why - this was the first season that really caught my interest, and this was all because of the technical side of the sport rather than the competition. My attention was grabbed initially by, of all reasons, a car running with '0'!

This sparked my initial interest, and then when the regulations were subject to a major overhaul initiated by the reformed GPDA, my interest in the technical side was exposed to even more detail to follow. Getting behind the zero car led to ultimate disappointment in the overall championship, but meant that I was able to follow a genuinely exciting sporting contest right to the end of the season.

Obviously the season also contained tragedy - but other than that, the 1994 season contained everything I am looking for in F1. Close racing, technical developments, rules overhaul, controversy, emotion, and ultimately was the start to my love of Motorsport. And all because the number 0 was used on a car...….

1976, Hunt vs. Lauda.

I went to the British GP at Brands and everything was still in the balance because Hunt had been disqualified from the Spanish GP and was then subsequently disqualified from the British GP. He was eventually reinstated in the Spanish GP but 2 moths later.

There was of course Laud's crash at the Nürburgring, which meant he missed 2 races and still it went down to the wire. There's never been a season like it.

'81 was a pretty close second, with the championship decider in Caesar's Palace car park in Vegas.

I must be in a minority as exciting races and dramatic cars are far, far more important to me in deciding upon a favourite season than the massively overhyped business of who ends up with most points. I was delighted Hills (pere et fils) won in 68 and 96 , Lauda in 75 and 85 and actually , that's about it - I liked the men and /or the circumstances surrounding their victory .

Very good shout.

'03 was a 3 way fight with interlopers until the penultimate race.

2007, '08 '10 and '12 were quite hotly contested too.

1966. Black Jack had the drivers and constructors titles won with a string of four wins by mid season and they only counted 5 races, but it was intriguing watching the return to power with the swap to 3ltrs. The simplicity and ingenuity of the Repco developed Oldsmobile block in a space frame out performed some much more complex machinery.
It was also the last year at Riems, one of the great challenges of F1.

The list of drivers competing reads like a roll call of champions.
Reporting of F1 in the Australian media in those days was so bad that if Jack didn't win I had to wait 10 days fpr my Airmail copy of Autosport to get any results at all!
Used to catch up on vision when a friend who was traveling with the circus showed moe some of his super8 films when he was home.

For me it would have to be 1985.....why?

Well, that year the turbocharged F1 cars were at their ultimate, totally bonkers best.Free of any artificial power restrictions, those things could run with over 1100bhp in qualifying and use ultra sticky Q tires. I witnessed Keke Rosberg hurtle around an unadulterated Silverstone GP circuit at an average speed of 160mph + .......not just once, but twice. It is still the most incredible spectacle I have ever seen at any race track, before or since.

Also, over a 16 race season their were 8 different winning drivers. How's this for a roll call of F1 icon's....Prost, Senna, DeAngelis, Rosberg, Mansell, Alboreto, Piquet, Lauda....that's 6 World Champions alone. Take a look at the rest of the grid because the depth of talent was unequalled.....Laffite, Patrese, Arnoux, Tambay,Warwick,Bellof, Berger, Boutsen,.....the list goes on.

Today's excuse for F1 doesn't even get close....and the circuits were a whole lot more interesting too!

Quite so - I picked 86 because the GP was at Brands , and watching those cars there was the biggest thrill I have ever had in 50 years race going .

But I was at Silverstone in 85 too, when Keke reportedly stubbed out his Marlboro Red , said 'Let's do it' and bloody well did it , with a slow puncture too .An astonishing display of sheer cojones and it makes me tingle even thinking about it.

A privilege and a joy to have witnessed a number of GPs in that era live from trackside .

I'd love to see today's F1 drivers given the 1985 cars to drive for a whole season. It would be fasinating to see who could and who couldn't cope. I have a hunch the current, utterly predictable finishing order, would be really shaken up.

I can dream I suppose.................I'm just very grateful I was able to watch F1 when it was at it's peak. Sadly, those days will never come back.

I can't pick a specific season as my favourite, but my favourite era would have been the 80's I suppose. I'd been watching as much as I could on TV from the early 1960's, but 1979 was the first year I attended the British GP (just for race day). For the next 6 years I attended every British GP, camping at the circuit early enough to be there before the teams arrived (I didn't have much of a life back then!). I was also able to attend a few events overseas in these years too, including the wonderful 1983 Monaco GP. Seeing the cars & teams evolve through mostly Cosworth DFV engined and into the monstrous turbo nutter engines was fascinating, to see (and smell) those things in action was awesome. After this time I got more of a life (and a job involved in motorsport) and although my TV watching continued, my live attendances reduced.

I was very nearly 40 by the time the 2009 season finished, and I had been watching F1 since 1982 (or the age of 11-12, if you prefer). 2009 was still the best season I can recall - the surprise of the Brawn, the technical shenanigans, the appeals, Button managing to frighten Vettel off the road in Canada (which seems terribly familar, can't think why) and the team just about holding on to the championship on a shoestring budget* by the end of the year.

Fairytales haven't happened in F1 for a while, before or since.

*yes, I know, I know, there was the Honda money, but still.
