lets take your example, you break your car race 1 and are screwed in race 2+3, you still have 27 other chances to win during the season in 1986, if you broke your car, you had 8 other chances. a top driver has much more chance getting a win from 27 vs a win from 8 But I dont think the comparison is fair unless your judging against competitors from the same era to be honest for that very reason. Its difficult really to even compare Neal and Plato on stats of wins per start etc because the first 8 years of Neals BTCC career were spent in machinery that was never going to get him near the front as opposed to Plato who nearly always had works drives from the off. Rouse wasnt always in control tho, I am sure he had to defer to Gordon Spice a number of times before branching off on his own |

You can also as good as write-off somewhere between a third and half of races as the chances of winning a third race reverse grid after winning the first two is almost impossible in most cases. The fact that it’s only ever been done twice and Plato being one of those is case in point. Also, if you have a DNF or an off that puts you way down the grid in Race 1, then that’s Race 2 as good as write off in terms of scoring a win.
It’s easier for a “lesser” driver to score the odd win in the present format, but it’s far harder for any driver to score a high number of wins over a prolonged period. Take someone like Patrick Watts. He never scored a BTCC win did he? But I’m sure in today’s format he would. |

Certainly Patrick Watts is a candidate for best driver never to win a race and certainly today’s sporting regs would have helped. Certainly he was someone in the Rob Austin mold IMHO, so there’s no doubt he probably would have notched up at least one

That makes perfect sense, to do a shakedown local to home before spending all the time effort and money taking the car to Spain only to find a critical flaw. It wouldnt surprise me if its a behind closed doors at an airfield or private track |

Whilst it may mean absolutely nothing, Rob Collard earlier tweeted a picture of his gym with a caption saying “making maximum use of the gym tonight #wintertraining” and I replied “ “Maxed” out now then? 😉” and he’s liked that reply.

I'm taking Rob as a definite. The only question marks as far as I'm concerned are the second seats at BMR and Excelr8. I was up until very recently 99% sure Ash was continuing at BMR; now I'm suspecting he isn't. Whoever signs him up is getting the best of his generation.

Well unless something comes up to contrary, I think we can now safely say he’s staying

It looks more likely that the Good Old Boys will be at PMR, unless they're just playing with us on Twitter.

Wouldn't it be lovely if Mat Jackson was in the second PMR seat?
