Will the GP2 main championship use the new F1 points scoring for race 1?

Are you sure for Eurosport International? I thought they would try to get the UK rights from BBC, but the international rights are in a number of local tv channels.

Would I be right in assuming a main series round at Abu Dhabi pretty much confirms the GP2 Asia series will be shelved after the 2009/10 championship?

Here's today's press release regarding the calendar and the confirmed teams list (including car numbers) -

My thoughts also. 've always said they might as well have ditched GP2 Asia this year given how underwhelming the calendar is.

Dubai, Losail, Shanghai and Sepang should say goodbye to GP2, then.

p-matt, this way is more elegant than that - or at least less shocking.

The current GP2 Asia really reflects the economic crisis... was probably very very close to being binned completely.

I don't think Dubai will be hosting GP2 anytime soon.

Apparenty Mortara will come back in F3,with Signature.
He is in conflict with Arden and he has a 2 years contract.

True. It would be nice if they added the circuits in the Middle East (e.g. Bahrian, Dubai and Qatar) to bookend the GP2 Main Series in 2011 but it won't happen

Why go back to F3, he's already shown he's quick enough in GP2 and would be competitive next season. Is it money issues?

No he has apparently no money issue but his contract with Arden doesn't allow him to race for another team in GP2 in 2010.

Should we expect the GP3 to visit Bahrain and Yas Island too in 2011?

No, it would be too expensive for the series to go there. Part of why GP2 is so expensive is that it supports many F1 races. Travel is very expensive to these events and everywhere bumps up the prices by 3 or 4 times. Plus the fact Abu Dhabi is on te calendar does not signal the end of GP2 Asia, remember Bahrain was on the main series calendar before GP2 Asia even existed. I'm sure they are just going there because Bernie it to be there.

Also I just saw on the iSport website that they have confirmed Davide Valsecchi.

Spudy, I can't follow that reasoning. Bahrain was on the main series calendar before GP2 Asia even existed because GP2 Asia didn't exist. Once the Asian series was created, Bahrain didn't need to be in the main series. Of course the Asian series can go on, but it seems unlikely to me.

Valsecchi's a great signing for iSport. I think they'll be back on form next year

Bad news for DAMS, though - Boullier's off to Renault

Agreed. The only way the Asia series could go on is with several stand-alones in the F1 off-season and Bahrain, possibly Malaysia in 2011. I can't see it happen.

Excellent that Valsecchi is signed up for iSport. Hopefully he will win Asia and have a decent showing this year in Europe.

Even so, GP2 Asia will continue for definate. The plan is to run the same cars in both Europe and Asia so there are no redundant cars to save money. The series to us makes no sense as there are so few races on the calendar but I think that is in large part due to the financial situation at the moment. I believe GP2 fully intends to increase the calendar again in the future. Whether it works as a series I dont know but I think for teams it a good testing ground for new drivers given the lack of testing now avaliable.

I think Valecchi will be great. I think Turvey will be solid all year and could be a very good driver with the right team which I think iSport is for him. Valsecchi will probably be a little more up and down but if he can continue some of that form from Abu Dhabi iSport, ART and Addax look set for a good fight. RE could come into it too depending on who they sign.

Is Clos confirmed at RE? I presume Parente will go somewhere. I hear he'll go back to Super Nova, subsidised by Virgin Racing. I also hear Hildebrand is sniffing about also with some Force India backing, which seems bizzare, why would Force India support him?

In previous years the new cars have not been available until Febuary or March, so how will the teams fit in a 2011 Asia series and then get the cars back to do the pre season testing and then be ready for the first European race for the 2011 season?
It does seem crazy to me I been told that the new car won't be a great deal different from the present car, the teams have already got the cars, so if the Asia series expands it will mean a return to air freighting the cars to and from Europe as they did when Bahrain was on the main series. At present with 2 sets of cars they ship them out and back again as there is not the urgency to get them back for the European series. Surely this will push the budgets up meaning less drivers interested in driving in the Asia series.

Hildebrand lives in Sausalito California. Same place Vijay Maylia parks his ass when he comes to America. They must know each other personally.
