Racing abroad and medical insurance
We're thinking of doing a couple of two-driver events on the continent this season (Chimay and possibly Spa). When I travel abroad I normally take out standard travel insurance in case of illness / accident etc, but I doubt this would cover me in case of a (god forbid) accident on the track. With no NHS abroad what do you do? If anything?

doesnt normal private medical insurance cover you? If not you should be able to specify, if the small print excludes racing? If that fails try Fairmont or Competition Car Insurance in Nottingham. Have to say that I have never thought abt it, you got me worried now!!

Just trying to renew my annual worldwide travel insurance with Direct Line and found out that if I am 'participating' in motor sport then I am NOT COVERED FOR ANYTHING from the moment I step inside the circuit entrance. So if I trip over and break an ankle I'm on my own; if I was spectating it would be different, how about that for logic!
So can anyone recommend a good ins co or broker, who does holiday travel insurance and will include a bit of club racing abroad? |

If you're racing within the EU your EHIC should cover you for emergency health care.

Your EHIC card will cover you in the first instance, but long term is a different issue. My wife has had no trouble in Spain where the treatment has been amazing (if you know the lingo) but then she doesn't race cars, although it shouldn't make any difference as an accident is an accident in the eyes of the NHS. This only relates to treatment . Why have you only thought about it just because you are doing a couple of abroad meetings ?
You could be injured loading your car up at home ! |

Yes, EHIC will work in EU, and as has been said in UK the NHS is OK - and I have UK-valid private medical insurance with my job. It's mainly the repatriation / other losses cover if the van is nicked from, or damaged, or I am damaged, at a circuit that I need cover for. A good travel insurance policy covers many situations - or at least looks like it does until you claim....

Don't know whether Mrs MM has been reading this thread or just has little faith in me, but she badgered me into taking out some cover today in advance of our race at Zandvoort at the weekend. Enough cover for even my debts/repatriation/w.h.y cost £140 for the season, given that that's 10 races at 4 events IMHO it's good value.
And you don't often see me using the words "good" and "value" when referring to insurance. www.moris.co.uk, they're part of Everitt Boles. |
