Mick Hill
Does anybody remember Mick Hill racing his Capri against a high powered transit van at Silverstone in the seventies. I was only about 10, so I may have some detail wrong.

Don't remember the race but remember the Van. This would have been Ford Supervan 1 - a transit with GT40 4.7 power. At the time usually demonstrated by Chris Craft.
Ford later built Supervan 2 in the early 80s, powered by Ford DFL from the C100 sports car. In the 90s, Supervan 3 had Benetton Ford HB power. Mick Hill had a few Capris, his first also had a GT40 4.7 V8. |

He built the first, orange, Capri in 1971, using the suspension & other bits off the Lola T70 that Barrie Smith crashed in the 1970 BOAC 1000kms, and as Andrew said, it had a 4.7 litre Ford V8. He built a second, 5-litre engined one, in 1973.

Thanx Andy great pictures. There was another Capri driver in the 70s called Dave Matthews, he drove in the British Touring Cars in the seventies, i think he was sponsored by Lindrick Motors. I was at the British Grand Prix in 1973 when he had a big crash. Does anybody have any recollections of this driver?

Dave Matthews
I first remember Dave being succesful in 1971 driving the Team Broadspeed Castrol 1.3 Escort. He won the Up to 1300 RAC Touring Car Race (Rd 2) at Oulton Park. I also saw him win his class in Rd 4 at Silverstone. I was at Croft for Rd 7 where Dave took the 1300 class and finished SIXTH overall! A week later at Silverstone in the GP meeting he again took the 1300 class. I was at Rd 9 - Oulton- where he took another class win.
In 1972 he moved into a 1.8 Broadspeed Escort RS1600 and I saw him win his class at Rd 2 Oulton Park on a streaming wet track. Dave was on top form when I saw him next at Silverstone in April. He took THIRD place overall in the Escort as well as the classs (Rd4). The next time I saw Dave he was battling round Brands at the GP meeting. His door-handle to door-handle battle with Dave Brodie was the highlight of the Saloon car race. Brodie just took the class win and Second place with Matthews third. Rd 7 at Pulton saw Matthews in fine form again taking SECOND place overall behind Gardner in the all conquering Camaro. Despite the Brodie/Matthews pairing they could only take 3rd in class at the Silverstone Tourist Trophy, but they did set fastest lap in class. Rd 9 at Mallory and another second place for Matthews once again behind Big Frank in the Camaro. 1973 and the Broadspeed Capri proved fragile. However at Silverstone it was on the pace. The shunt was horrific. Matthew's Capri was in collision with Dave Brodie's Escort just after Abbey. The cars crashing heavily into the bridge. Matthews car was airbourne and was a complete write off.

Dave Matthews returned to the sport in the early '90s as an enthusiastic supporter of his son James's racing. James Matthews finished runner-up in British FRenault in '93, then won the British and European titles in '94 (that year, in the British series, he matched Alain Prost's record of 11 wins in any FRenault championship). For various reasons James never won a race in two seasons of British F3 ('95 and '96) and faded away from the sport. Dave stayed involved though: he invested in Manor Motorsport (the team with which James had so much success in FRenault), enabling it to make the move into Formula 3 in 1999 and win titles with Marc Hynes ('99) and Antonio Pizzonia (2000). Matthews Sr is based in the West Indies these days but as far as I know is still a part-owner of Manor.

Thanx Peter. I've got another question. What would have been the quickest around Silverstone, would it have been the last incarnation of the Cologne Capris or one of Mick Hill's specials, thoughts anybody. I would hazard a guess and say that Mick Hill's would be fastest in a straight line, but the Cologne would have it on the lap?

Given that Vince Woodman had a cologne capri though rarely used it in club races, if at all I would guess that Mick Hills car would have the edge. If only on weight and power ratio. A GA puts out about 400BHP The Cologne Capris were all steel don't forget.
Incidently I am puzzled by that photo of Mick Hill & Gerry Marshall in Baby Bertha at Donington '77 I did not think Baby Bertha ran in '77 except for a late season run out at Thruxton coincidently beating Vince Woodman in his Capri. It coudn't have been '76 as Donington was not open- Any thoughts? |

Frank de Jong's http://etcc-history.it4us.nl/ tells us the Jochen Mass ran a quualifying 1:34.5 in the 1973 RS 2600 (2900 Weslake). This was a second slower than the winning BMW 3.0CSL. They finished two laps down BTW.

Peter, by ordinary I meant the usual 70s Spec Saloon Capris, fitted with big V8s. Those of Mick himself, Strawson, Rosen and maybe others too. None too sophisticated, but bloody fast in a straight line ! They looked and sounded great, but lost out when the G6 Sportscars appeared, dressed as Skodas/Imps/Esprits/VWs etc

Ah,
Well the 70's brought us many different classes and most of them were enhanced technically. Group 2 was a bit outlandish when you consider it as a "production" based championship. That said it had a certain rationale whilst special saloons at that time were innovative. The early Mick Hill Capri was just such a beast. If you were to ask me what I'd really like to race now, it would be a Group 2 Mk1 GAA engined Capri. But that's my bag. I still think its a shame we don't have these monster spaecials anymore though. |

Thats the original Supervan alright (pictured at a very wet Brands IIRC I was there) and may have been driven by either Terry himself or Chris Craft. Cannot remember the result of the race with Mick Hill though. Glyn |

Great info on Mick Hill thanx everyone. Sorry to jump about again, but I'm going back to Dave Matthews again. Regarding him being part owner of Manor Motorsport, is this the company that is located at Dinnington Sheffield, not 1 1/2 miles from my house! Has anybody out there got any pics of Dave Matthews in car or out?
