Mclaren and Jaguar settle "Newey affair"

So Newey stays at Mclaren. Jaguar gets an apology from Mac but not what they really wanted.

Quote:
Woking, UK, June 13, 2001, 11.30 BST: Jaguar Racing and McLaren are pleased to announce an amicable resolution in respect of the future
employment of Adrian Newey, who will remain at McLaren. This settlement was today presente4d to and approved by Mr Justice Eady in the High Court in London.

McLaren and Jaguar Racing are very pleased that this matter has been quickly resolved in a professional and courteous manner. McLaren
acknowledges that Jaguar Racing has acted in good faith throughout.
The relationship between Jaguar Racing and McLaren has always been a good one and has not been damaged by this matter. Jaguar RAcing now understands the circumstances in which the confusion between McLaren
and Adrian Newey arose and has therefore decided to accept McLaren's apologies over this matter.

Ron Dennis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the TAG McLaren
Group.
"I would like to apologise for any misunderstanding that has been
caused over what has become a confused complex affair. I am sure that
in future, our relationship will be an excellent one and that our
rivalries will be confined to on-track competition."

Adrian Newey, Technical Director, McLaren International.
"I regret that this matter has occurred but I am delighted that it has
now been resolved. I apologise for any difficulties that have been
caused. I am sure that we will all now put this matter behind us and
concentrate on our common passion for motor racing."

Niki Lauda, Chairman of Premier Performance Division.
"I am glad that this matter has been concluded and it is gracious of
Ron and Adrian to each offer an apology which are fully accepted by
Jaguar Racing which is part of the Premier Performance Division."

TAG McLaren Group Communications Department.

Which means we would be seeing the same Mclaren design for the next 3 years...

If you ask me...the Mclaren (and Williams, Jag, etc) have cars which hardly differ from year to year... and althoght i have to admit the car looks sleek, its getting boring...

Look at Ferrari and Jordan...slightly more adventurous

In spite of all the nicey nicey talk, it appears Jag gets it's butt kicked off the track, as well as on. It may be just as well. With Newey, fan and journalist's expectations would have been so high Jag would have to start winning the first day Newey put on the green shirt.

Newey, or no, GO JAG!

So Jag stays the same poor little cat... Merc has more money than Ford does?

I think, Bernie must invent something to make great designers to change teams every 2-3 yeasr just for fun.

So was I. Changes makes for more excitement, and this would have been a very exciting change. I was really looking forward to seeing what Newey could have done for Jaguar.

Yes and no I think. Looks like Mr. Newey will either stay put or move on to F1 Sailboat design. For Bobby Rahal, this must be a huge loss of face - note that Lauda was the spokesman "accepting" the apology - which cannot be good for the internal functioning of the Jag team. On balance, a McLaren points finish, but not a real win.

Jag got £4 million from what I've heard...

Newey will be designing the cars up to 2003 and Ron Dennis is going to put him on some obscure "special project" - like Gordon Murray, the other wasted genius that resides in the depths of McLaren. Ron doesn't like Newey much anymore, so he has 2 years to find a new chief designer, and keep Newey "busy" - i.e. paying him a lot of money for nothing - just so another team can't get to him...

I think that the McLaren F1 car was a "special" project...
