Andrew Spence - Recovering from Spa Accident

In the Spa 6 hour thread, Andrew Kitson (#213) and Marcus Mussa (#224) refer to the nasty accident of Andrew Spence in the Lurani Trophy whilst driving his FJ Elva 200. Andrew suffered serious multiple injuries from which, according to MotorSport, he is now slowly recovering but the process will be lengthy. If anyone on this forum knows or is in contact with Andrew, please convey to him 10-Tenths best wishes for a full recovery.

This is the latest news through Duncan Rabagliati of the FJHRA:

10 days ago, FJ driver Dr Mark Green organised the air ambulance from Goodwood to Liege and safely collected Andrew and Sue, while Norman and Candice were dropped off to bring Sue's car home

Andrew spent a few days at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge , being assessed, but Sue had him out of there and back to their home as soon as she could , and as a practicing OT herself, has been highly motivated to put Andrew through his exercises.

Andrew's spinal cord was crushed badly in the accident , so , although he has some movement back , the road to recovery will be a long and hard one

I'm sure they will continue to welcome your support which has been enormous to date. FJHRA paid for the ambulance , and contributions have poured in - thank you everyone for showing the true spirit of FJ in this regard.

If anybody wishes to contribute, or to send messages of support, from outside FJHRA I am sure this would be appreciated. You can contact the FJHRA through its website (http://www.formulajunior.com/).

This message from Andrew Spence is now on the FJ website

Thought you all would welcome an update on my progress, recovering from my Spa shunt…………

For those interested in things medical, I broke 2 lumbar vertebrae and on my right side 10 ribs, scapula and collarbone. The vertebrae are now held together with 6 stainless screws. My legs were bruised but unbroken. The spinal cord was not damaged but nerves for sensation and movement from the waist down were damaged but not severed. I had limited movement and poor sensation initially but have some return but it is minimal at the moment.
I was in the CHU Hospital in Liege until October 8th then, under the expert and very welcome management of Mark Green, flew back by air ambulance to Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge.

Sue, as many of you know, is an Occupational Therapist, and also specialises
in balance and postural stability. Knowing the Health Service ropes enabled
her to bring pressure to bear to get me discharged as quickly as possible and I got home on Thursday Oct 13.

We are now working on Sue's programme of regular physio and therapy exercises to regain mobility and strength in my legs. It looks likely that my recovery will take months rather than weeks but I can see small improvements almost every day.

I am surrounded by Get Well cards. It has really made a big difference to receive so many messages by letter, email or telephone. Thanks everyone. If I attempted to list everyone who has been in touch it would take ages to read and with my memory I would probably forget someone. Sincere thanks to all that have offered and given some really practical help and support to Sue and me. This extends beyond Formula Junior and includes many others both inside and outside motorsport.

We heard from Duncan this week that Formula Junior had raised enough money to cover the costs of the Air Ambulance, we are both overwhelmed by your generosity and will never be able to thank you all enough.

Unfortunately we won't be able to join you all at the FJ luncheon but we will be with you in spirit. In the meantime I will attempt to keep you updated on progress via the Website.

Andrew

Hopefully his positive attitude, and Sue's expert attention will speed his recovery.

Latest new on Andrew Spence

Just visited the site and saw all the info on my nearest and dearest. I am pleased to say Andrew is recovering from his accident but, as noted previously on the site, he has a long way to go. He was poorly for about 10days but yesterday took a turn for the better and managed to get up into a wheelchair for 45mins and has started to eat again. Our days are filled with care and exercise routines, which being a therapist I can do with him, which means a much higher input than he could ever get through thr NHS. We are managing to maintain a sense of humour despite all, especially when I do things like putting both legs into one leg of his shorts - never going to get walking with me around to help!
Thanks to everone who has contacted us by card, letter, email and phone to send their good wishes and support it really helps to keep us going.

It would be wonderful to get an update about what Andrew's progress is, but in the meantime all of us at 10-Tenths express the hope that Andrew continues to make a good steady recovery, and that he and Sue are able to enjoy their Christmas and New Year.

Many thanks, Marcus; we already have permission from that website (but thanks, again) to use their updates on Andrew and it's pretty clear from previous messages that Andrew and Sue are also happy for us to do so, so I am quoting their message in full, here:-

Christmas 2005

Hi there everyone, just a quick update on the news from the Spence household.

Andrew had a review appointment at our local hospital last week and the x-rays confirmed that his bones, in particular his back, are healing well. He is very pleased to be able to stop wearing the spinal brace most of the time, he will still need to wear for moving from bed to chair to avoid sudden movements like falling backwards or forwards, good job he’ll be doing all his drinking lying down!

Andrew continues to improve and can now move his legs and feet, but still unable to do much with the movement. Sensation is normalising but he tends to still get ‘fireworks’ in his feet. Spending more time in the wheelchair can now tolerate 1½ hrs.

Hoping to get to our friends in the village for a drink over the holiday, uphill for me pushing there with wheelchair but once I’ve had a few we can freewheel all the way back!

Spending our Christmas at home and looking forward to our adapted party games ‘move the body part’ and ‘pass the pee pot’

Well, we hope you all have a great time at Christmas, and we will raise a glass to wish you a happy and healthy 2006. Look forward to getting to a race meeting in the New Year to see you all.

Lots of love,
Sue and Andrew xxxx

Very pleasing to know that good progress continues to be made and with good humour, in a what must be difficult and uncomfortable circumstances!

Just a brief update on Andrew's progress. Muscle strength is building slowly and Andrew is now able to use a pair of pedals which, with a bit of inventiveness, are strapped to the footboard of his bed, he is able to manage about 10mins. We now have a standing frame on hire which enables me to get Andrew up into a standing position so we can start to re-educate his balance and improve standing tolerance. He has now inspected the damage to our car and knows it will take more than an oil change to get it running again however it has prompted him to get out the drawing board and start some working drawings. So onwards and hopefully upwards in the coming months. We have managed to get Andrew in and out of our car so when he can tolerate being out of bed for longer we will try to get to a circuit to catch up personally with you all. Sue

Update on Andrew Spence

Just to let you all know that Andrew continues to make slow but steady progress. He is really working hard with his exercises, the big stick helps, and seeing the results of his labours. Standing practice continues and although he can't stand without the machine I reckon he is nearly half way there. His back and trunk muscles are getting much stronger and he is now able to lift his own legs, can-can next month?
He is certainly back to the old mentality, he is lusting after titanium and carbon fibre wheelchairs, weight to power ratio's again, planning the Elva rebuild and deciding which race meeting we will go to to get a dose of petrol fumes. Thanks to everyone for their continued interest and support it makes a huge difference. Sue

Good to hear from you all, hope Monaco and Pau provided some good racing, wine, women and song! Hoping to get to Silverstone 28th July, it would be great to see you all if you are going. Till then keep the Ecosse flag flying.

Andrew has new lightweight wheelchair, he has been testing out it's limits, managed to turn it and himself upside down today - never learns does he? Going to fit a restrictor to his carbs............

Love Sue

Yes Sue good to hear that Andrew continues to make progress. It won't be long before the go faster chair has uprated suspension and 10 more bhp. Hope to see you both at the Classic.

Latest news on Andrew is all good. We are at physio gym twice a week and hydrotherapy once a week, as well as continuing the exercise regime at home. Doing Andrew a lot of good, he's much stronger and has much more stamina and tolerance for exercise - but wearing me out!
Now able to stand up without assistance and take a step forward and back with each foot. Suprised me and his physios, Louise and Hayley, by actually walking about 3 metres last week! All exhausted by that but good for the morale.
The Elva is now in the workshop, thanks to lots of helping hands. I have started (under supervision from 'Himself') measuring all the chassis tubes, bent et al and the process of dismantling it. So the car now starts it's rehabilitation too.
We will be at Classic Silvertsone on the 28th July so hope to catch up with lots of people there.

Considering the last time I saw you was at the Spa control tower I am really pleased to read your reports. Great news.

Now, when you get hold of that spanner make sure its an exact fit, otherwise you'll round off the nut and all hell will break loose!

Hi Peter, so far so good, I've got all back suspension dismantled and off, as well as a lot of the plumbing/wiring, not a rounded nut in sight, but I am being allowed into the snap-on tool box!

Next stage more drastic - cutting away chassis to get engine and gear box out, so it's on with the goggles and out with the grinder and cutting tools. Spectators beware.............................
