Used tyres
At each race the teams will get through a few hundred tyres. Some will only be on the cars for a handful of laps. What happens to all the old tyres? I am sure they are no longer made into coffee tables!

It seems a waste, I believe they are destroyed with some of the material being recycled. I don't know if unused tires are repurposed for later races or not. I suspect not. There is only one supplier, so there is no F1 "tire wars", still Pirelli wouldn't want their F1 tires making their way into the hands of competitors. They want to keep construction and compound details as secret as possible. I also suspect that the tires provided to teams outside of race weekends/testing (static display, etc.) utilize a non race construction and compound?
Google finds a decent amount of info on this topic. Richard |

AT le mans this year we had a ten tenths trip to Michelin and they showed us around there facilities there, during that trip they told us that all tyres remain the property of Michelin and not the teams so i suspect that the same goes in F1

I know the teams have to pay for their tyres however Bernie then charges Pirelli more their signage at the circuits. Seems like the teams are paying Bernie for the tyres then.

Richard's right. I remember watching a youtube video (can't remember what it was called so can't find it again) about the manufacturing of Pirelli tyres at their factory and they said the used tyres were all destroyed/recycled. Unused tyres were taken back off the team's rims and reused at another race, otherwise they'd have to get rid of every unused tyre including wet compounds after every race if it doesn't rain.

I used to go to Magny Cour when Thoroughbred GP was on. The front tyres were the same size as the MK1 Escort. Got them free after outlap, fast lap, in lap..

And I thought 'Used Tyres' was a boy band.

I've got a set of rear tyres from one of Nigel Mansells qualis at the British GP....currently eroding away down the side of the garage. No idea what to do with them! Too big for coffee tables.
