McDowell To Race in Remaining Events?

He has been racing in the Grand-Am series this year for Memo Gidley's team. While I haven't followed the series that closely, I've gathered that he's quite quick and also known to be a bit of a trouble-maker on track.

p.s. To be honest, I'll believe it when I see it. Every year it seems like we get a rash of 'X driver to race last X races' etc, and only half of them ever pan out.

EDIT: Started new thread.

Great news to have another American driver out there, and hopefully he will have a reasonably competitive package. Will Power racing for Team Australia would be great, as he's surely more capable than Marcus Marshall, and he's a very marketable driver, not least because of his mildly amusing name.

From what I've seen of him McDowell strikes me as quiet able to drive in Champ Car.

Its great that another American driver is getting an opportunity to drive Champ Cars. Let's see how he does.

fazzaz has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
There were rumors in the VIR GrandAm paddock last weekend that McDowell would be replacing Hunter-Reay.

I remember seeing him back a couple years ago when he drove in star mazda and dominated most of the races. Certainly a capable driver.

Yes, it's not a third car - RHR is being stood down, apparently.

I really don't know what's gone wrong this season for Ryan - his past record suggests that he should have been as competitive as Glock given Timo's rookie status. Still, it would be a shame for the series if he doesn't have a ride for 2006 - AJ isn't enough to carry the US fanbase on his own, and I'm not sure any of the current field has the charisma and general appeal of Zanardi or JPM.

Michael McDowell is blazing fast, I think two years ago he was runner up Star Mazda, and last year he utterly dominated the series. He's done well in GrandAm, although as mentioned he has been known to be very aggressive. He was penalized a few weeks ago and had to miss the last race because of it. Either way he is a very marketable, American driver with plenty of skill. I have no doubt that he will come up to speed in a Champcar in very little time.

A story appeared on SpeedTV today.

Quote:
Michael McDowell expects to make his Champ Car debut in the final two races of the season, according to the driver’s own Web site.

It remains unclear whether McDowell will steer a third Rocketsports entry or replace one of the team’s regulars, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Timo Glock. Hunter-Reay has made no secret about his dissatisfaction with Rocketsports’ weak performance this season, while Glock’s backer DHL will be part of Porsche’s new ALMS effort and may halt its Champ Car program.

I actually feel badly for RHR. He got crappy equipment this year (like a Lola that had to be trashed after 3 races), and was on a team that didn't seem ready to field two cars. If he's not back with Rocketsports next year, I hope he ends up somewhere good. He really is a very marketable driver and has showed some talent - CC would be wise to find a way to place him on a decent team (maybe reunite with JV at PKV) next year.

I'm excited about McDowell, but hope his run at Rocketsports doens't send him the way of Hunter-Reay - From an up and comer to a "what happened to that guy."

Ok, deal confirmed. He will race the #31 car, Hunter-Reay is out.

Feel bad for RHR. Although I would imagine that he's getting paid for sitting out the last two races. Hasn't he got a "personal services" contract with OWRS?

Perhaps there's a spot for RHR at DCR?

I think one thing RHR's performance at Rocketsports shows us is how difficult it is for rookies to come into a series on a bottom feeder team. RHR is a race winner and showed pretty well in his first two seasons. He ends up on a poor team and basically has done no better than Matsush|tsa or Mier or any number of names that are synonomous with being a joke.
