5 Years On.....*gulp*....

As teams argue about weather conditions, and officials and teams battle with a seeming lack of wet weather tyres, batch differences, and politics, the 2011 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 marks a couple of sad anniversaries in the history of V8 Supercars.

See, the 2011 race as we just about all universally know marks the 5th anniversary of the memorial race to Peter Brock - The King of The Mountain. It was a real spectacle that, as a race, was befitting of a memorial event to a true sporting champion.

Five years ago today though, an event occurred that put some tarnish on the Brock Memorial weekend that no one ever wants - a major crash between David Clarke and Mark Porter that would ultimately cost Mark his life.

Most of you will know the details of the event, and those of you who don't are welcome to search the many articles online to learn about it.

What would be really good across this Bathurst weekend is if as many of you as possible can post your tributes to Peter Brock and Mark Porter - a rolling tribute some five years on, if you will.

A lot has happened in 5 years, and V8 Supercars has fortunately not suffered an event or weekend as dark as that one since. It is important to remember and appreciate though that risk and danger is only ever millimetres away and as the legend and the stalwart have tragically shown, risk and danger favours no one and strikes when we least expect it.

Let's share some happy memories as we watch and wait to see who will greet the chequered flag on Sunday afternoon in 2011 and never lose sight, nor forget, those heroes who have gone.

All gave some, and some gave all!

Arrived on that awful crash scene not long after it happened and ran into 10/10ths own sizzle who had seen it all.....

When the police started measuring out tyre marks on the road before handing the circuit back to race control, we knew it was bad.

I think we knew the result deep down as soon as it happened AP.
A very sad day indeed, and not a sight I wish to witness again any time soon.

RIP

25 years on

Since Mike Burgmann's fatal accident on Conrod Straight (1986), resulting in the creation of 'the Chase'.

Nice tributes to Porter and Cooper in the V8 story book too...lets hope we never see that again and this year is a crash free event.

Thanks for noting the 5yr anniversary JDI. Thought about Mark a lot yesterday & will be having a toast for him tomorrow late afternoon to remember a truly special man who loved life, his family & friends, his work and his motor racing. Gone but not forgotten
