RTH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Focus RS is dead

Two months earlier than expected the last 2-Litre turbocharged Focus RS rolled off the production line in Germany last week carrying chassis number 4501 only 394 days after production began 2147 of the limited edition were RHD sold to UK buyers.

Lets hope they have something else at least as good lined up soon.

The Focus RS is a piece of . Er, IMHO!

Over-priced, over-powered (the ST170 is a much better package), and an interior that looks like a 5 minute panic dash round Halfords, with a few extras from the back pages of Max Power.

Utterly utterly hateful car, aimed at 17 year old boy racers with a mental age of 9.

By far the best car in the Ford line up - and the best for some considerable time, probably since the Escort Cossie - is the Mondeo ST220. Fast, capable, subtle, stylish.

Best car on the Ford lineup is a F-150.

wait a sporty car that is "over-powered? "
not likely
i agree the St220 is a much better/nicer car, but the RS is a piece of Ford hostory now and sure to be cherished for a good blast through the hills. I would have love to get my hand on one...And my friend has an SVTFocus- the 170 as you say...and he put a Supercharger on it, for about 230 Hp and 220 ft. lbs of ttorque, that with the limited slip, a very capable car...and more fun than a barrel of monkeys

F-150? I'm talking about cars! Ok - the ST220 is the best in the current Ford UK lineup...

Yes, believe it or not, you can have a sporty car that is over-powered. Especially if it's fwd. Ask anyone who's driven a previous generation Saab 9-3 Aero.

Have to admit I haven't driven either the RS or the ST170 myself, but a friend who's a motoring journalist on our local rag has, extensively - he had them both for a week, covering 1000+ miles in each.

Had Ford got it right, then the RS wouldn't have been over-powered - with the right chassis set up, 200bhp should be no problem through the front wheels. But they got it sooooo wrong. Ok, on a track the Focus is sure footed, handles well, and is genuinely quick. But as soon as you get it on a real world street surface (i.e. not billiard table smooth), the front becomes so uncontrollably skittish that you can't get the 200bhp down even if you wanted to. The last thing you want when you're giving it the berries through a classic B-road twisty is the front end suddenly jumping 3 foot sideways towards lots of solid looking trees.

And all that doesn't even bring into play that horrible interior.

Rather than producing this RS, they should have gone all out and delivered a genuine 4wd 250+bhp Focus RS to take it straight to Subaru and Mitsubishi.

If we can believe the industry spies - just that is still on the table and it will look like the 03 WRC but its likely to be nearer £30,000, - or will they now wait for the new body shape in 05 ?

There's been rumours about it for some time. At one point, I thought the full blown 4WD verison was supposed to launch around 12 months after the RS.

Seeing as there still seems to be some (but not much) doubt about Ford's participation in WRC 2004, I doubt we'll see it now.

As you say, maybe in the new body. Or perhaps as final fling for the current Focus, like the Golf R32??

It looks like the SVT/ST170 is gone too . If Ford doesn't produce an AWD version,I'll be supercharging my SVT. I've driven in one with a Jackson Racing unit, and it's a whole lotta fun !!

I want Ford to build a Focus Cosworth...so it'd have a kit like the Rally car and go like s**t of a shovel.

...agree there. Alfa 147 GTA for starters. Breathing on the damned throttle scrubs many £'s of rubber off the tyres!

Just goes to prove that there is a limit to how much power you can put through the front wheels. I know the Focus RS uses the Quaife ATB diff. Do the other Ford models also use this?

The SVT version has an open diff..but less hp too..
A Quiafe diff would have made a nice option.

There is an article on it in this months EVO mag. The only thing I don't like the sound of is that you have to junk the clever multilink rear suspension in favour of a solid back axle.

the link works if you copy the complete link into the addres bar ie: [url]http://www.supercars.net/cars/2003@$Ford@$Focus%20RS8%20Conceptg.html[url]

now that would be one hell of a fun car

Why not an AWD version of the Focus to keep up with the rally car? Then whack a turbo on the Cossie...

Like a WRX but from the blue oval?
