1986 All Japan Touring Car Championship
1986 All Japan Touring Car Championship
Okay then, here’s my (and your?) attempt to make sense of the 1986 Japanese Group A scene. The races: Round 1: 1986-03-23, Nishi Nippon (60 laps of 2.816 km = 168.960 km)* Round 2: 1986-07-27, Sugo (114 laps of 2.655 km = 302.670 km) Round 3: 1986-08-31, Tsukuba (133 laps of 2.045 km = 271.985 km) 2h30m race? Round 4: 1986-09-21, Nishi Sendai (80 laps of 3.771 km = 301.680 km) Round 5: 1986-11-09, Fuji (176 laps of 4.441 km = 781.616 km) 5 hour duration? Round 6: 1986-11-30, Suzuka (51 laps of 5.914 km = 301.614 km) *Likely to have been shortened – due to rain? It is described as a mixed weather event starting in fine condition turning into rain. Only half points were awarded and some co-drivers didn’t receive points at all, eventually deciding the championship in favour of Nissan driver Aguri Suzuki. His co-driver for the season, Takao Wada, was among those no-scores at Nishi Nippon. Round 3 had a run time of 2 hours 30 minutes which is the reason for my ?. Here’s a few links to races: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_tIj...eature=related Seems to be a pre-Fuji Intertec highlights of both the European scene – featuring some hot Brno footage – and the previous four rounds of the Japanese series. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2FIb...eature=related The Fuji Intertec. As an afterthought this is about as hot a 1986 Group A would be, perhaps loosing out to Spa and Bathurst in absolute judgement, as Fuji is relatively flat but with that spectacular front straight and back ground. The classes and point distribution was unchanged from 1985: Division 1: 1001-1600 cc Division 2: 1601-2500 cc Division 3: over 2500 cc From PZR we know that these were also the classes of the Japanese Touring Car Championship, but unlike 1985 when five different classes were contested. The points: The points: Pos – cl. – o/a P1 – 20 – 9 P2 – 15 – 6 P3 – 12 – 4 P4 – 10 – 3 P5 – 8 – 2 P6 – 6 – 1 P7 – 4 P8 – 3 P9 – 2 P10 – 1 I guess that the JTCC championship was decided without overall points, but missing a confirmation on that. The standings – four rounds from six counting: Pos. driver, car (points) total 1. Aguri Suzuki, Nissan Skyline RS Turbo (14.5 / 26 / 21 / 16 / 13 / 29) 119.5/92 points 2. Takao Wada, Nissan Skyline RS Turbo (NC / 26 / 21 / 16 / 13 / 29) 92 points 3 . Kunimitsu Takahashi, Mitsubishi Starion Turbo (6 / 19 / 29 / NC / NC / 21) 75 points 4. Akihiko Nakaya, Mitsubishi Starion Turbo (6 / 19 / 29 / NC / NC / 21) 75 points 5. Kaoru Ito, Honda Civic (0 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 12 / 0) 66 points 6. Tomohiko Tsutsumi, Honda Civic (0 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 12 / 0 ) 66 points 7. Toshio Suzuki, Toyota Corolla (8 / 0 / 24 / 29 / 0 / 0) 61 points 8. Masanori Sekiya, Toyota Corolla (8 / 0 / 24 / 29 / 0 / 0) 61 points 9. Masahiro Hasemi, Nissan Skyline RS Turbo (7.5 / 1 / 10 / 26 / 16 / 0) 60.5/59.5 points 10. Keiichi Suzuki, Toyota Corolla (6 / 8 / 0 / 8 / 20 / 23) 65/59 points I case of a tie completed kilometers over the season decided the verdict – as in 1985. An overview of teams will follow and each entry will be detailed further after that. Translations as previous from http://translate.google.com/translate_t# http://dk.babelfish.yahoo.com/ ..in that order. Jesper |

Lessons learned from the 1985 thread, I will start posting the entries that I know the least about - three entries as it happens. Here's the first one which is actually a 1985 entry.
#13 Division: division 1 (1001-1600 cc) or 2 (1601-2500 cc) Car: Volkswagen Golf GTI Typ 17 Homologation: A5731 (Group 1 trans.) or A5096? Engine: 1588 or 1781 cc? Tyres: unknown (Dunlop?) Driver 1: 斉藤 新 / Shin SAITO Driver 2: 本多 淳 (Honda Kiyoshi / Honda 淳) Kiyoshi HONDA?/Jun KITA? Driver 3: 鈴木 恭二 (Suzuki Kiyouzi / Suzuki 恭 two) Kiyouzi SUZUKI? Entrant/sponsor/etc.: R1: R.SCOMBE-GOLF R2: R.S.COMBE-GOLF R1 / 1986.03.23 / Nishi Nippon / DNF R2 / 1986.07.27 / Sugo / DNF R3 / 1986.08.31 / Tsukuba / - R4 / 1986.09.21 / Nishi Sendai / - R5 / 1986.11.09 / Fuji / - R6 / 1986.11.30 / Suzuka / - My comments: As usual doubting weather this was a 1.6 or 1.8 Volkswagen so any confirmation would be very much appreciated. |

Division: unknown Car: unknown Homologation: unknown Engine: unknown Tyres: unknown Driver 1: 古屋 徹 (Huruya Tetsu / Tetsu Huruya) Tetsu HURUYA? Driver 2: 中野 亘 (Nakano Wataru / Nakano 亘) Nakano WATARU? Driver 3: 清水 健司 (Kenji Shimizu / Ken Osamu Shimizu) Kenji SHIMIZU? R1 / 1986.03.23 / Nishi Nippon / - R2 / 1986.07.27 / Sugo / - R3 / 1986.08.31 / Tsukuba / - R4 / 1986.09.21 / Nishi Sendai / DNS (DNQ?) R5 / 1986.11.09 / Fuji / - R6 / 1986.11.30 / Suzuka / - My comments: One of 11 entries that didn’t start the Nishi Sendai race, presumably because they didn’t qualify. This entry though, like #77, was the only one not to start in at least one other race over the season. As the qualifying results don’t have any mention of either entrant or car, I’m a bit lost, but here’s a lead: Driver 2 raced a division 1 Toyota Corolla #36 at round 5. |

Division: 3 (over 2500 cc) Car: BMW 635 CSi (Chassis #74, ex-Schnitzer) Homologation: A5118 Engine: 3430 cc (Schnitzer) Class: division 3 Tyres: Pirelli Driver 1: 長坂 尚樹 (Naoki NAGASAKA) Driver 2: 茂木 和男 (Kazuo MOGI) R1 / 1986.03.23 / Nishi Nippon / 2. – 2. Defending championship winning team and driver combination Nagasaka and Mogi, but much less of a force in 1986. |

Division: 3 (over 2500 cc) Car: Mitsubishi Starion Turbo A183A Homologation: A5113 Engine: 1997 cc X 1.4 = 2795.8 cc Class: division 3 Tyres: Yokohama Entrant/sponsor/etc.: R1: TOMEIスカイラインタ-ホ゛ - TOMEI SUKAIRAINTA - Ho゛ - TOMEI [sukairainta] - [ho] DOTDT R3 and 5: ミツヒ゛シスタリオン - SHISUTARION゛MITSUHI - [mitsuhi] DOTDT sister Lyon =Tomei Mitsubishi Starion Driver 1: 袖山 誠一 (Seiichi SODEYAMA) Driver 2: 木下 隆之 (Takayuki KINO****A) Driver 3: JONES (Bradley JONES, Australia) Driver 4: 小幡 = OBATA (Sakae OBATA) Driver 5: 永松 = NAGAMATSU (Kuniomi NAGAMATSU) Driver 6: 永松 邦臣 (Kuniomi NAGAMATSU) Driver 7: B.ジョーンズ = B. JONES (Bradley JONES) Driver 8: 小幡 栄 (Shigeru OBATA/ Obata glory) Driver 9: 中谷 明彦 (Akihiko NAKAYA) SODEYAMA, KINO****A, JONES, NAGAMATSU and NAKAYA seems to have the drivers. OBATA is the one or ones I’m uncertain of. Driver 4 Sakae OBATA is listed as driver for fifth position at round 2 in the Bridgestone results, but only family names given at the JAF site. The DNS-OBATA at round 4 translates to Driver 8 Shigeru OBATA on Google. Results: R1 / 1986.03.23 / Nishi Nippon / DNF R2 / 1986.07.27 / Sugo / no info R3 / 1986.08.31 / Tsukuba / 5. – 3. R5 / 1986.11.09 / Fuji / DNF R6 / 1986.11.30 / Suzuka / no info My comments: -Mitsubishi Ralliart Japan entry – factory entry – if I’m correct. -Four starts, two finishes and two DNFs and 24 points to my calculations. -A young Bradley Jones apparently impressed the Japanese enough to rekindle “a Mitsubishi factory effort” in Australia, coming Bathurst in October. The Jones tended ’85 Bathurst cars were motioned into effort for the Australian endurance races in August/September with Mitsubishi Ralliart Japan |

Haven’t found any information about this variant, but guessing it’s en evolution of sorts. -Kunimitsu TAKAHASHI finished 3rd in points, with NAKAYA in 4th, both on 75 points, but TAKAHASHI covering more kilometres, “winning”. |

The team (or is it sponsor?) was still involved with the next generation Skyline up till the late 80’s. Fairly ordinary results. Sister car to #24. |

(SEKINE/MIYOSHI/HAGIWARA) My comments: Another Diesel Kiki entry – this time with driver names known by me. The team (or is it sponsor?) was still involved with the next generation Skyline up till the late 80’s. Better results than sister car #22. |

The first of 38 race starts I have of the late Anders Olofsson in the AJTCC, winning 11 of them outright and DNF’ing only six times. |

R6 / 1986.11.30 / Suzuka / DNF My comments: Tomica was the sponsor? Given that HASEMI was the driver, I would take a guess that he was also involved in the ownership of this team. Third at Fuji, only beaten by the RAS Volvo and Schnitzer BMW, must be regarded as a very fine result, beating all the “homies”. |
