24thunder should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Should yellow or red flags decide outcome of race?

Should NASCAR finish races under yellow or throw the red flag with 10 or less laps to go?Any opinions?

Depends on how many laps to go.

10-3 laps to go = red

3 laps or less = yellow

I wouldn't want the lap count to decide when to throw a red or when to throw a yellow. 3 laps at Talladega is 8 miles, but at Bristol it's 1 1/2 miles.

But, on the other hand, I do like the green/white/checkers that Nascar uses in the CTS series. Guess I'm a mixed bag on this one.

Lars--Hello & thanks 4 reply & insight.I thought of the differences in lap lengths at different tracks but forgot to include it on head post!Very gud point & I'm starting to get an inkling of the turmoil that NASCAR has to go thru:confused:

I feel that Nascar needs to be consistant in their decisions, either make it a rule that the race has to finish under green or that finishing under yellow is okay.

And please no more bogus "debri" cautions because one of their "chosen ones" is about to go a lap down to the leader !!!

I don't know if that was a bogus caution,or not but no one seemed to c the debris, sort of leaves it all up in the air,IMO!That's what I'm basically saying as well-hat NASCAR shud decide on a policy & then stick to it-no matter what,IMO!

Personally, I think a race should never end under anything but a green flag, and that the last 10 laps should also be green flag laps. If a caution comes out with 10 or less laps to go, the race should be red flagged until they can race again, and then restarted with 10 full laps. (Maybe 5 laps for larger tracks.) Otherwise it isn't racing to the finish, it's just finishing the race.

That seems to agree with the poll voting as well! I've heard other posters comment on whether or not it's correct to let cars come into the pits during a late race caution/red flag situation as it gives an advantage to the cars in back of lead lap cars field to gain quite a few positions at end of race, any comments?

Of course they wouldn't be pitting under the red flag.

Pitting to take on 4 new Goodyears is a chance you take, smotimes it works out & sometimes you just wasted $1200.

On a visit to the Daytona 500 in 1997 I also visited one of the short (1/2 mile) county speedways and in the 100 lap feature race ONLY racing laps counted and not those under yellow.

Could this be another answer for NASCAR. Or alternatively - and to take into account the different circuit lap lengths - rule that if the yellow is shown within the last 20 miles the laps under caution do not count and the remainder of the race (from when the yellows came out) will be run under green.

I really don't car how they do it, but all races should have a minimum of two green flag laps to finish the race.
Parades finish under yellow, races under green. Only exception would be in the case of rain when a restart is out of the question.

I think ASA have a rule like the last 5-laps have to be run under green: but of course they're only Short tracks so the length debate is quickly eliminated.

PLus, there's fuel concerns: if it'll end up being a long caution then with the fuel so tight everyone'll run out!!!

Tnx 4 reply & hello!Ur suggestion sounds gud except if NASCAR would make it 20 miles or less as a benchmark then that wud make a different number of laps at most tracks ie. Talladega=7.52 laps & Martinsville=38.02 laps & about every size in between! Also U'll notice that these aren't full(whole)lap numbers,so I don't really think it wud work for those reasons,JMO!
