Salo to drive for Pollock in Cart?
Robin Miller and espn seem to think so....
http://espn.go.com/rpm/2003/0111/1491032.html Also... "As far as car count, 19 Cosworth customers are currently signed up with the potential of two or three more by next month's season opener at St. Pete." So, at least we should be on par with F1 in terms of car count this year. |

They're speculating that Pollock's will be a one-car team. I was kinda hoping for two.

Car #2's reserved for a certain French-Canadian in '04.
Mika... Well, at least it's another car on the grid. But cripes, he'll just be another Blundell/Lehto/Johansen: Occaisonally fast, but with the fan appeal of a wet dishrag. Doesn't Mexico have anyone _good_ they could send up here? The North American appeal for the series is hurting bad. |

I don't know why they would pick Salo when Pollock would have a choice of North American talent to choose from...

That's interesting... I'm not sure I could picture Eddie taking a pay cut to race in a less glamourous series where he'd be required to be open to fans, the media and such... but then, I've never met him so I can't really judge.. he just seems like the type that wouldn't like that sort of thing.
From the sounds of it, he'll announce 1 car, but that doesn't mean he won't have another come in later. |

Yeah, Eddie Irvine in Champcar sounds a little strange, but wouldn't that help with promotion of the Brands Hatch race
Salo in Champcar would be OK, it's always nice having ex-Formula One drivers, the European fans can relate with these drivers and recognise the names. |

Hmm, I forgot Salo used to race for Lotus.
I don't think he'll be in a Pollock car, although he is a very good friend of Jacques, and that can't hurt. |

Frankly they'd be better off with Lemaaire the first year, in case they aint on the pace they can blame him.

Having Salo will certainly significantly increase the European exposure to CART. As a person who has spent some time in Finland, Salo is loved there as much as Hakkinen. People tend to feel he's as good if not better driver but hasn't had a decent car. Exposure to CART there is virtually non-existent, which is strange for a country which produces so many excellent drivers in so many classes.

Besides, I've always liked Salo...not a Irvine fan but both would be an interesting and welcome addition to CART imho

Salo's a good choice, plus he's fed up with F1 and Ove Anderson which will make Europeans look at F1. I'd love to see Irvine in CART. Under-rated driver and he get's loads of attention.

He's fed up with F1... that's a good start!
As for Eddie, to be honest, I'm not even sure how he stayed in F1 for so long. He was damn lucky to drive for Ferrari for sometime, and I have no doubt there are some in Cart that could whipe the floor with him. |

Eddie Irvine is too old and too rich to enjoy driving in Champ Cars.

Not sure about Pollock being a Euro-snob as you put it, what part of Europe is Jacques from? Or Zonta, for that matter?
Salo has been widely expected to enter the DTM, the German-based Touring Car series, and reputedly sees CART as a last resort (although I'm sure not as 'last' as the IRL). Craig would be bette roff with a more committed driver, and as he seems set on hiring an experienced driver, that would mean CART rather than F1. I'm sure Memo would give his right arm for another crack at the series. |

Based on driving skill and experience, I would think Salo is miles ahead of Memo (not that he is a bad guy to have either).
Salo wants to run CART, great! I would rather have ex F1 drivers than ex something less - wasn't there a concern in other threads about the quality of drivers? |

I like Lee's comment on Salo having the appeal of a "wet dishrag". He may bring a little Finnish excitement, but I think the potential for a north american fan frenzy that would back guys like Fogarty or Gurney is much more appealing.

I don't think Fogarty is any more charismatic than Salo. And Salo has a lot more hair.
Pollock did not hire Zonta nor did he want him -- Zonta was brought to BAR by BAT, who wanted him for the South American market. So he doesn't signify. Perhaps Irvine could be lured to CWS if someone sent him pictures of the bevy of babes to be conquered? |

in my book, salo doesnt bring much to the table. tons of experience (bit more hair), but only if you get amped up about F1 cast-offs racing in CART is it something. |

Well, I don't get amped over F1 "castoffs" but lets review some of the F1 guys who have come to CART: Derek Daly, Danny Sullivan, both M. Andrettis (I know, there is a before and after for them!), E. Fittipaldi, R. Moreno, E. Cheever, M. Blundell, N. Mansell, A. Zanardi...Now this is by no means a complete list, nor is everyone on it a big winner but not a bad group to pick drivers from. As an American I would love to see some American drivers, but a good, solid talented grid makes for good racing - wherever they come from.

Im sure Irvine would love champ cars..........after all , he would be a big name , and would love all the attention he would get . They should chuck theh Brazilan Nilton Rossoni in the deep end with a good champ car seat....Give it to someone upa nd coming , i mean Salo said he's had enough of travelling around the world when he announced his retirement a few months back ! |
