McLaren to join Williams on Michelin rubber for 2002F

According to sources in France, McLaren Mercedes will be fighting for the title on Michelin tyres in 2002. The French rubber has already won three races this season and is tipped to set the pace next season. McLaren currently use Bridgestone and won the 1998 and 1999 titles with the Japanese company.

The news was revealed by an unlikely source - BMW boss Gerhard Berger. The Austrian says that Michelin will be supplying their rivals next year and that the deal has been signed for some time.

Michelin boss Pierre Dupasquier has made it clear that there will be no preference to any team using Michelin at any time. "For a tyre manufacturer to understand the result of a technical solution, you need to make sure the result is not coming from a particular car, " he said.

"So having two or three front-running teams is a must - two is mandatory, and three is perfect."

is it smart for Mclaren to go to Michilen? i dont think so

Well Ferarri won't be going anywhere. They'll stay with Bridgestone, so with Goodyear supposedly coming back for 2003, there'll be an interesting three-way tyre battle too!

Why not SP? I've got the feeling Michelin will be the way to go for 2002.

Maybe McLaren feels the need to change the parameters to beat Ferrari, or they might have seen that Michelins are the way to go judging by the way Williams have been able to dominate under certain conditions. Michelin will improve, and by next year, theirs could possibly be the dominant rubber in F1.
