Who remembers that pass Piquet made on Senna - Hungary 86'?
Does anyone remember this pass Nelson did on Senna.
It has to be my BEST ever overtaking manoover I have EVER seen. Piquet, goes round the outside of Senna at the first corner at Hungary, locking up and going completly sideways in front of Senna, and still holding the place - Simply magic! |

I don't recall Piquet making that move. The name Mansell however does ring a bell ..

Dug some reports up and indeed Mansell in 1989 did that move. Senna was abit unlucky in defending his position as backmarker Johansson blocked him due to problems. But Mansell was probably unstoppable anyhow. Ayrton was the last to become victim of Mansell's famous slingshots that weekend. Mansell passed Boutsen, Caffi and Prost in the same fashion ealier on.

I don't remember that pass. I was 8 at the time and not really interested in motorsport. I did, however, have a massive collection of Matchbox cars.
I actually don't believe it anyway. You're trying to tell me that once upon a time, cars actually passed each other at the Hungaroring!!?? |

Not to take anything away from our Nige - he did good in '89, but Piquet did indeed go around the outside of Senna during 1986.
Lovely manouvre. File along with Mansell's pass round the outside of Berger at the Mexican GP. Another classic. |

Indeed, TimD, I didn't recall correctly. Hungaroring wasn't always that bad obviously.

I remember the Piquet and Mansell moves well, it took Piquet two goes at pulling off the pass which looked more desperate rather than pure skill, Mansells move in 89 on Senna showed that given the same chance he was a match for Senna.

Sodemo has it right imo. Senna blocked him on the inside approaching the turn one on Piquet's first attempt. The next time Piquet sold him a dummy by faking inside and then drove past him on the outside with the most decisive, committed, move you're ever likely to see.
Thanks Sodemo, I'd almost forgotten. Great stuff as James Hunt would have said, and no doubt did at the time. |
