A third manufacturer..

Don’t be too fooled by the heading. But recent whispers suggest that a third manufacturer may be entering the V8Supercar category as early as next season, not as a manufacturer of their brand as a V8Supercar though, but as a sponsor of a current V8Supercar.

Put this into perspective for just a second; a Holden or Ford painted and stickered into another manufacturers colours, with their brand across the window and across the rear door/quarter panel. The more influenced "punters" still know it’s a Holden or a Ford, but this brand is still receiving masses of exposure out of their one car team. Let’s say they've secured a level one driver, car and team for a one car assault on the 06 championship and they come out winning the first round at the Clipsal 500. The media make a large hype with various headlines and images in print nationwide, great exposure and publicity which inturn aids the 3rd manufacturer to sell cars on monday. And to the manufacturer, just another way to advertise…

A serious possibility, which may happen sooner, rather than later...

It did happen already... Hyundai branding appeared on the TKR car some of last year... and the folks at Holden went into a demented funk....

And that was only Hyundai earthmoving equipment - a market Holden's not in.

Yeah - I can just see a Ford with big "Mazda" signs. Actually - it sorta makes sense - Ford owns a chunk of Mazda. So you could have all those corporate tie-ups represented - Ford with Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar, Aston-Martin. Holden (GM) with Chevrolet, Pontiac, Subaru, Daewoo and Buick - nah, never happen. Again.

I read something a while back about this.

The reason holden were jumping up and down over the TKR car was because there is something in the rule book somewhere stating that another manufacturer is not allowed to sponsor a car. TKR had "HYUNDAI" written down the side of the car - it looked like it was Hyundai the car manufacturer, but in actual fact it was Hyundai Construction Equipment. Mark Porters Ford this year is sponsored by Hyundai Construction Equipment, and has THAT written down the side - even though they didn't want it there (looks prettier as just Hyundai)

I might be wrong, but I did read about this rule a few years ago...

Surely Toyota would have jumped onto the band wagon a few years ago and promoted its Lexcen then wouldn't it??

In hindsight its no different to Rick Kelly being in Buick brand at Eastern Creek and China earlier this year, but slightly different...

Let another manufacturer back a car, confuse the public, then to stop the farce apply common sense and allow some other manufacturers to compete with their own products..........

Surely AVESCO/TEGA/CAMS whoever can't tell teams now who can and can't sponsor, but i guess AVESCO is now picking drivers for the series, rather than the competing teams......

They could if they deem it to be bringing the sport into disrepute (ala WPS's "no money from ford" windscreen banners at tassie)

No, they really couldn't tell a team who can sponsor it unless it is a completely inappropriate (read indecent) sponsor. It would definitely be a restriction of trade and the ACCC would be very interested in hearing about it.

If it ever happened, that is.........

Personally i think if another manufacturer tried an idea as suggest in post #1, the local media would absolutely slaughter then for trying to ride on Ford or Holdens success.

The local media are hilarious... did anyone else notice the ad for the Sydney Morning Herald with the navigator in Neal Bates' Corolla rally car reading their sports section?

A pity that newspaper virtually ignores rallying in this country!!!

plonkey has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I wouldn't be surprised to see the "away races" increase from a maximum of 4 to 10 or 12 away races and the creation of a totally international series with drivers from Saudi, China, Malaysia , USA, Europe etc.

I could see Tony Cochrane aiming for something like that. He dosent care where the money comes from.

The best teams will compete in this series and Toyota and Chrysler will probably get a look in.

The Ford- Holden rivalry will remain in tact with racing in a separate Australian only series maintaining a similar format to what has been run for the last few years...minus China.

Bring back the Toyota Lexcen!!!!

HRT used to be sponsored by Yamaha too remember.

At least one team is sponsored by Mercedes Trucks - or used to be.

Mitsubishi Electric has been a racing sponsor in the past. Usually Magna proddie cars though.

Ahh shut up Jonesy.

A thornier question might be, what does Holden do if the Focus ARC project is a wild success?

So I guess in the meantime It's Go the Buick Royaum!

Royaum? You're kiddin' right?

btw - GTR - love the Av. I wonder where the piccies came from You want some more, cause you didn't take the best Cam Mac Beemer shot I've got?

Raglanparade should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Ive been saying this for ages.

Let there be a V8 Supercar Australian Series - Which runs through our summer. This means you can have twilight races and assured better whether. The Finale of the International Season, and the Opening Round of the Australian Season will be Bathurst. Then you go through to April with the Clipsal 500 in April being the Season Finale.

You then run the International Series during the cooler months. From April through to September. The Australian Series remains Ford v Holden, and the International Series allows any manufacturer that makes a car inside of the rules.

This approach would increase the spectators at Australian Rounds due to better weather, and races co-inciding with annual leave the majority of australians take in summer, and the increased levels of public holidays. In terms of TV viewing, Channel Seriously will not have any clashes with Football, and be able to show more of the Australian Series on TV.

Any viewpoints on this ?

Yes and No. Subaru ownes a few shares in Gm, therefore, GM owns only a small bit of Subaru. Or, what about Fiat, don't GM own that car company?

Looking back to the first post in this thread, there are a few teams without significant manufacturer support who I am sure would be quite happy to rock the boat, and stick it up the establishment (yet again) by running in the colours of an alternative manufacturer, in return for $$$$. Dynamik, WPS, Tratty, any others?
