I'll be interested to see how the COTA short circuit runs on the V8 Supercars weekend they share.

The real shame is you have to watch Indycar if you want to see WC.

I have seen WC run on ALMS/Indy combined weekends and it works fine. PLM desperately needs WC back. The support events sucked brick this year.

At least they're back with ALMS at Lime Rock. Might have to make it up there for sure this year.

Now that's a statement! They want to attract GT teams and drivers who don't want to get honked by prototypes.

I hope that grids grow enough so all the races are split: GT and GTS in one, TC and B-Spec in the other.

Good for them. Something the ALMS should have done a couple of years ago. I hope it works out. I think everyone is a fan of WC as it has provided some excellent racing through the years.

Well this puts the WC series on the map in my mind. I imagine Audi, Mercedes, and BMW were approved specifically since there are teams who want to field those cars. If somebody wants to field a Ferarri or McLaren, then I bet they will be allowed too.

By the way is the Porsches that run in the GT class the Porsche 911 GT3 R?

They start as normal Cup's. Then they put on a bunch of RSR bits, ABS, launch control for the standing starts (no traction control though), bigger rear wring, bigger front splitter and more power.

I'm not sure why nobody didn't just bring over a GT3 R, maybe it's because they've slowed morphed into what they currently are and nobody wanted to start from scratch.

Here's a lap around Sonoma in the GMG WC Porsche from this season. It was my first time driving a WC car.. noticeably more downforce than a normal Cup. The clutch/flywheel are extremely light and combined w/ engine internal differences and ECU mappings it makes for a super response engine.

I dont think we'll see the Porsche GT3R in WC. If you read in the article about what they think about allowing the Callaway Corvettes compete against the homegrown WC Corvettes then I cant see it happening.

No doubt! They split a lot of the races in 2012, which seems to have worked out (mostly) as far as cautions go.

Thanks for sharing Mike! Great to have a first hand perspective. I was wondering, do you find the level of driver skill in WC (GT generally) to be the same as the other North American series? Better / worse?

I almost forgot about this series (for shame). I remember seeing some rounds on TV several years ago, and it was quite exciting. A thread about the series makes perfect sense because of all those Merger stuff imminently coming. While that new American Prototype and GT series starts to get their rules and races set for 2014, this could be a huge opportunity for SCCA to snatch up attention and race fans for themselves, away from the soon to me merged series.

It's a golden chance that the SCCA I feel will capitalize on. Bringing GT3 cars aboard is an excellent start.

Now ther SCCA needs to bring back A-Sports racing, make it the top class in WC, and blow the new American Sportscar Series right onto its American Racing Sportscar Extravaganza.

LOVED World Challenge back in the days of those B5 Audi S4s, E36M3s...there was even a Supra and RX7 in some of the races. I kind of graduated to watching ALMS around the time the WC got marginalized...but maybe it's time to give this series a look again.

It's kind of hard to tell since I've only done one race. I think there's a bigger spread of skill from the front to the back compared to all the ALMS classes (including PC/GTC) and Rolex GT. In all honesty, with my experience in the 3 series this year I'd have to rate overall driver skill in order of: ALMS, Rolex, WC. Granted, there isn't that big of a difference and the WC race didn't feel like a club race or anything and the guys at the front handily kicked my ass (finished P8, I don't even remember where I qualified.. I think P12 or something weak like that). With more than 40 minutes in the car to set it up I think I could have done a little better... but they're still really good. If it makes any difference, 2 weeks after the Sonoma WC race I qualified P5 (with a difficult car to drive, went faster in the practice sessions) in the Patron Ferrari at the Laguna Seca Rolex GT race (before getting penalized and moved to the back of the pack). But, I knew the track and had driven the car before.. so I was much more comfortable. And the week before that I was absolutely decimated at the Porsche Supercup race at Spa (don't worry, I have plenty of excuses for that performance too! :P).

I think the difference in performance between the cars in WC GT was the most surprising to me. The Rolex and ALMS cars (in the same class) all go about getting their lap times in a very similar way... in WC GT it seemed like the lap times were generally pretty close among all the different cars, but the way they got to it was really different. Not just the Volvo Vs. Cadillac, but even the Porsches, GTR, Ferrari, etc. I don't know if it's due to vehicle prep/cost or specifics to the rules.

RLM just said Sofronas (GMG) already has 4 Audi R8s lined up for 2013! Pappas will run the SLS. Green Hornet with their Porsche. Holy cow, didn't see this coming. The series could have just changed the playing field somewhat.

I'd heard GMG may run five. Hopefully I can make it to St. Pete this year.

This is going to be an awesome series in 2013, I think.

Looking at Mid-Ohio qualifying times, the Volvo S60 was around an ALMS Lotus Evora GTE (if I'm reading correctly and not missing anything weird about conditions). I didn't realize they were that fast and the Volvos were already amongst my favorite racing cars.

The CTS-Vs and Volvos seemed to take turn 1 through 4 like the GTEs last year at PLM. And think the Caddys may have made more noise than the Vettes, they were definitely deep and rumbling beasts.
